Fantastic

I balked for a while at shelling out for these - $70? When I already had a bunch of cheap headphones laying around that worked...okay? But like the other reviews here say, they really are "the last pair of headphones you'll ever buy".
I'm an SWL, so I spend a lot of time at strange hours trying to dig weak signals out of the noise and static. So headphones are a necessity to keep other members of the house from going insane! I've worn these for hours and hours at a time, and they've always stayed comfortable. Moreover, they perform significantly better than the stock speaker on my receiver, and even a decent external speaker I have hooked up to it.
I've tried to come up with something negative about these and I can't. I'm glad I got 'em.

Great--if you match impedances
|
Time owned: more than 12 months

I bought these phones some time ago for use with my Ten Tec Jupiter, mostly CW. I was satisfied, but when I switched to a K2 and started participating in HF phone nets, I became disappointed. The upper voice frequencies were muffled and copy in poor conditions wasn't good. For this reason I switched to studio hi-fi phones which reproduced voice better. The ST-3s went into storage.
Recently, however, I pulled them out of storage and while reading about them noticed the 600 ohm impedance. Hmmmm. Maybe an audio transformer would improve things? I built a small box with a Radio Shack audio transformer inside. The 8 ohm side went to the rig while the ST-3 phones were hooked up to the 1000 ohm side, but using the center tap to give 250 ohms, close enough to 600 ohms.
Bingo! The result was improved volume and improved response at the higher voice frequencies. The ST-3 phones now sound great on CW and voice.
So if your rig has a low impedance output for its phones, use an audio transformer with the ST-3 to be really happy.

Very nice headphones

I just ordered these headphones based on reviews here at eham. And the price is right! They are very comfortable, and the sound is great. But don't expect anything fancy. I can't even find the brand name on them anywhere. They adjust to my head very well, and are very well made. In the past, headphones sometimes made the edges on my ears hurt. But these have a very light touch and are well padded. So far, I am very pleased with this prodict.

Superb Headphones

I have used the JRC ST-3 for over four years with the Icom R-75 shortwave receiver, the Yaesu MP-1000MP Mark V Field, and the Kenwood TS-570Sg tranceivers. They are extremely comfortable for long periods of usage. I have had them on for over eight hours in SSB contests and they are wonderful. Spend the $70 for the last pair of headphones you will ever need.

They're Keepers

The ST-3's are a nice addition to any communications system. They do not produce anywhere near the audio quality of a standard pair of hi-fi headphones and are, therefore, poor performers for music. But I bought them for my receivers and they work wonderfully in the voice range and soften the hiss and static considerably. They're great for communications and voice intelligibility is excellent.
My biggest concern, when it comes to listening with headphones, is damage to my hearing from all of the high frequency hiss. I'm more comfortable using the ST-3's for that reason alone.
Build quality seems to be good. Quality of materials is fair.

Solid, Comfortable, Reasonable Price

I've been using these for about a month now. Very well constructed, the sound is clear and concise, but, most of all, they are very comfortable to have on for an extended period of time. Even more so if you're lacking in the hair department as I am! I also own a David Clark aviation headset (for flying) and these compare well to the David Clarks in the comfort catagory. One big difference however, the JRC was about $70 the David Clarks are $300. I like them so much I'm buying another pair for my AM istening "station" in my bedroom. You won't be disappointed with these.

These phones sound great, and are extremely comfortable for wearing hours at a time. The pads also do a good job of minimizing local noise. I should have bought them sooner.

Stop Shopping - These are the Best!

I too through the years have tried many, many headphones and finally decided to splurge on the JRC ST-3. It is truly the best headphone that is dedicated to communications that I have used ... and yes that includes David Clark and other "high end" brand headphones. Construction is superb. Very comfortable. Blocks out external noise and fits comfrotably with a seal around the ears. Frequency response is superb for voice and CW. I can now hear things that before would go unnoticed. Excellent product.

So Comfortable

I can recommend these headphones very much. Not only do they have great audio response in the correct frequency range for the human voice, but they are the most comfortable headphones I've ever worn in 50 years of ham radio. They are mechanically top cabin with solid stainless steel and beefy construction. Even the cord is heavy duty and feels like it will last a lifetime. Highly recommended.

Very nice cans for a reasonable price. Great JRC quality. Recommended. If I had four ears I would buy another ST-3.
