Sweet RIG!
|
Time owned: 0 to 3 months
|
I have been using Kenwoods since 1975, Mostly SWL. I got the General ticket in 2002. So I bought a new IC746. I hated the DSP sound. Very poor receiver. Mostlikey not the norm for that rig, may have been defective? Traded back to the Kenwood 570 and 870, both great but weak in the DSP area.
The in July 2007, I wanted a new mobile. IC7000 is ordered. To me, the DSP made it my favorite Rig.
It has the Bandscope, adjustable filtering. Just Great!
OK, Now that brings me to the review for the IC756pro.
I remember thinking in 2002, I'll wait till the 756pro is around $1k and snap one up.
Thats took some time, I find one on Ebay, as NEW, looks and works Perfect, box, mike, manual. Only seldom used! You KNOW the story! $1150.00.
I gets it, Its got two problems. Lots of noise in receiver, even without a antenna hooked up. And it, way out of alignment. I didnt waste time with the seller, he had to know of the problems. And if you can sell a broken rig to another HAM. Well you aint worth my time.
OK, This is getting a bit long winded, but it makes me feel better after a good VENT!
I have always been able to twik and tune the older kenwood rig. So I open it up. Get the repair manual out. Stare in there for about a day. OK, box it up sent it to the repair shop. Gets it back.
NOW, AFTER ALL THAT. THIS IS THE BEST RADIO I HAVE EVER HAD. WORKS PERFECT. EVERYTHING WORKS AND PERFECTLY. DSP AWESOME, FILTERS AWESOME, DISPLAY AWESOME, SUPER LOW NOISE FLOOR.
I CANNOT BELIEVE THE BAND SCOPE. I WILL NEVER HAVE A RIG WITHOUT A BAND SCOPE. NEVER...
OK GO GET ONE!

GREAT RADIO!
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
I bought the 756pro used on Ebay from W4PR in June 2005. The radio was in brand new condition and I really appreciate Stuart's honesty - it was just as he described it. It is the best radio that I have ever owned over the 37 years that I have been a ham. The only way I would ever get rid of it is to upgrade to a pro-III. Right now I see no reason to do this since the pro does everything I want it to and does it quite well. If you have the opportunity to get a good used 756pro, I would highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed.
I have used it on all modes/bands with great success. I use it mostly on CW and the digital modes and it works great on those modes. I gave it a 5 because it is a great rig for me.
The only problem I have had with the rig is to notice that when I use it on SSB with the internal tuner, the SWR seems to creep up. I'm not sure what is causing this problem, but I very rarely use it on SSB anyway so it's really not much of a problem. I can hit the tuner button when this happens and it goes right back down. The other "con" is that it does not transmit on the 5 meg ham frequencies.

Best Radio fo the money!
|
Time owned: months
|
|
Remarks: After many years of operating Traditional older radios (Which I stll love!) I decided to look around for a "DSP" radio that everyone is talking about these days. I had read testimonies about the 756pro and heard them on the air and couldn't afford thousands so I saw a PRO for sale and put the boat out!Wow! Wonderful receiver..thought there was something wrong until I realised it was just a low noise floor..The Signals jump out at you! I can hear them down in the noise as well. Everything is so clearly laid out on the Colour LCD screen. Loads and loads of features but easy to use! Cant be better can it? Aquired an Heil Hmi Mic and the TX Audio is superb. Best Radio I have owned and I have had quite a few over the years. If you see one of these used then buy it. Best radio for the money on the used market I beleive! 73's Folks

EXCELLENT RADIO TO BUY USED
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
|
I bought this radio from a fellow ham for US$ 900, in excellent conditions, I'm satisfied with the DSP, sensitivity, and the transmited audio quality, always I received compliments for the great audio. For me the scope is an excellent tool for DX hunting . I'll be waiting for the roofing filter from INRAD. Great radio for the money, I will change this radio if I could find in the near future an IC-756ProIII for the same amount of money. HIHI.

Good value on the used mkt
|
Time owned: more than 12 months

I have owned this rig for 7 years now. Bought it april 1 of 2000 so I paid the full price for the radio and if I would have waited about six months I could have saved a $1000. Over all it is a very good radio and an excellent value on the used market. for around $1200 you can have 95% of what you get on a proIII and for the most part that other 5% is only needed about 5% of the time. Every feature works on these radios as advertised. Oh yes the noise blanker does not take out electrical line noise but works fine on impulse noises. Bottom line I enjoy the radio very much and consider it a keeper. Would I buy another one. Nope - don't have to. I already own one and I would just fix this one if needed.

a good buy used

slick radio, great controls and displays, love the band scope.
Not a great receiver though, it sounds nasty compaired to my elecraft K2.
As with most radios of its time and price range, loads of gizmos and options, multi conversion, general coverage, and poor noise, fidelity, and junk comes through.
I use mine as a band scope and as an RF driver for the homebrew AM rigs.

Still an awesome performer!
|
Time owned: more than 12 months

I've had the entire 756 pro line, and continue to have till this day.
It has never dissapointed, or failed me not once.
The 756pro continue's to be a proven performer all around. Each control knob is positioned at the right spaceing for easy comfortable adjustments. The scope help's a great deal in finding signals. Reciever sensativity on all bands is excellent. Filtering not even an issue. Frequency stability is top notch. I've never had to align the radio, or have drifted since I purchased it 5 years ago.
Great modulation with the IC-SM8 and Heil IC Pro Set Plus head set.
If you have heard me on the air what you hear is what you get.
Currently have my 756pro, 746, and 756pro III. I have played with the Yeasu 1000MVm during a contest, and I will not be replacing my Icom.

Still in my shack

Time owned: more than 12 months

I like trying different radios and still do play with boat anchors, but this is my bread and butter rig. I've owned it for over 4 years (a new record for me keeping a rig) and it's not for sale! I still think it's the most rig you can get in $1200 range. It does everything pretty well and is easy to use. This is my first Icom and I'm pleased with it, so far. If it got stolen, I'd replace it with another 756PRO.

Great performer
|
Time owned: 6 to 12 months

After 10 month of use I made over 5000 Qs with this radio. Got it used for a good price. Twin-PBT is great and I just love RTTY filters with twin peak filter. I can read RY signals witch are unreadable with other radios and Auto-tuner can match almost everything.
I did compare it side-by-side with TS-570S, TS-950SD, TS-2000, IC-746PRO and IC-706MK2G. On my surprise the best performer on 50MHz was TS570S and IC706MK2G. I didn't find big differences with IC746PRO and I could read signals on 40m with 756PRO better then with TS-950SD.
I am not great CW operator so I didn't do any test there but in SSB with voice recorder and RTTY filters the IC-756PRO is winner. And for the price on the market you can't go wrong with this radio. I wonder if PRO3 is worth the money. Maybe in next few years I will upgrade but till then 756PRO is my king of the shack. :)

What more can I say about this rig that hasnt already been posted in these reviews? I love my Pro and its not going anywhere! I can now easily work weak signals that were very troublesome for me in the past. This rig makes it so easy. Not only is this radio a pleasure to work your amateur radio qso`s on but its also a beautiful swl rig too. When none of my buds are on the air I find myself tuning around the bands listening all over the HF spectrum. This rig is pure joy to own and operate.
