A good workhorse at a reasonable price

Mine is the /v model with the fans. Similar specs as the THP HL-200V50 (same 2 x SD1477 power devices) at a significant cost saving. BF966 preamp. Although I'm not sure if it achieves the 1dB noise figure this device is capable of, it performs adequately for general weak signal work. I've had a number of EME contacts on JT65 with this unit and it performs nicely - 30w in = 200w out. Worth the effort to set it up properly as it WILL draw in excess of 35 amps at 50w input - a recipe for a short life for the power devices. Will run all day on SSB with 50w in, but I keep the wick wound back on digital modes.

Good so far

I tend not to overdrive RF amps but a steady 15w seems to make the all the LED lights dance across the device. I'm sure you could drive a bit harder.
The RX amp is good as well.
I have the VLA200/V version. Which has twin fans on top....

Good AMPs

I own 3 different RM amps and have not experienced any problems. I do not drive them to full output as most will do, trying to squeeze every last watt out , then wonder why they burn up. Workmanship is much better than the more expensive American amps with better soldering attention to detail. They'll last forever if NOT ABUSED .

Great "do it all" PA
|
Time owned: more than 12 months

I believe it's a very good piece in my "station team".
I used it on Italian VHF contests and for MS FSK activity. It's been drove to its full power by my FT225RD and/or FT897.
You need:
-to use it following instruction
-to cool it properly (a fan or two are easy to install even though you got the "no fan" version)
You had not to:
-open it trying to improve thinghs... oscillations and so on are due to people which are "screwing" their PA thinking builder engineers are nuts!
-keep care of connections and SWR
On my opinion it's a nice PA, due to 12V supply you can use it on /P operations too.
Last but not least, almost for Italy and EU, RM offers good assistance.
I don't ever regret to have left my 4cx250 PA for this!

Had two units and both gave up within a few days of running. The units had two fans on top also and still gave up. Only ran them with a minimal input also. Save yourself the money and pay a bit more for decent quality.

Low Cost Amplifier

Have had mine a few days now, have the V version which has 2 fans mounted on the heatsink, gives just on 300W O/P for 50 Watts in, harmonics down 70dBc at full power O/P, looks pretty narrow on the analyser. For the price (£210.00), good value for money, looks cheap but performs OK.

200 W out but warm a lot
|
Time owned: 3 to 6 months
|
This amplifier cames hot quickly.
Cooling performances of the VLA-200 are greatly enhanced by adding two noiseless fan (we can find on computer's market).
For 40W drive we can measure 200W out and 24A.
There is now another model "VLA-200F" with "F" for fan.
Solid for MS operation.
Great amplifier.
