TOP SERVICE

Dear All,
I would like to share my appreciation for a good job working with me recently when my "baby" KWM-2 developed transmit problems. I was lucky to locate others but Hal was the first to respond to my email request for help to fix it.
Thanks Hal for a good job if you see this message. I have copied and pasted information from Hal's web-site
http://www.landaircom.com/ in case you ever need service work on Collins equipment.

Good Service and work
|
Time owned: 0 to 3 months

I recently sent my KWM-2 to Hal along with the PM-2 power supply for tune up and repair any issues. I found Hal friendly and easy to work with. The turn around time on the radio was excellent - and packing was great for the radio. The radio operates much better than before and is now in good alignment so the work done on it was top shelf.
Now during this time I decided to buy the 516F Power Supply from Land Air. He suggested it was a more robust PS and I'd be better served with it - which it seems to be. My only small complaint was I had to replace a tube socket that was cracked - either during transit or during packing. However Hal was very quick to provide me with any parts needed to return the supply to operational condition. We did this again when a cap shorted - mostly due to my negligence with the bias on the supply improperly set. Again Hal provided me with the replacement part free of charge and some instructions and advice on how to use the supply.
While we had some glitches due to operator error and old parts - you have to expect that with devices 35 years or more old. So far the supply seems to respond well as the does the radio. I also feel that should problems arise in the future Hal will be there to help me trouble shoot and fix the problem. And so I give him good marks and its been a good experience for me.

I am very pleased with the repair Hal did on my transceiver. Repair fast and shipped triple boxed. The price was very fair. I had the opportunity to drop off the transceiver while in town at a funeral.I saw Hal's excellent repair facility and have talked to many people about the great work he does. I am happy i had the chance to meet him in person. Hal is a credit to amateur radio.

Technical Report
|
Time owned: 6 to 12 months
|

I have collected numerous hf transceivers for over fifteen years and the most fulfilling part is when the radio leave the bench and able to make contact around the globe.I am not a license technician but i gave many thanks to my highschool budy Joe who encourage me to take a night course in electronic and communication,i didn't realise it would become a great pastime later in life. I have encounted many technician in this hoby, some that are more desirable than others.I have alltypes of transistor radios, from General electric to Alinco and everything inbetween but i must say there are three pieces of equipment i was not able to diagnose properly dispite with chematic on hand, and they are the Collins kwm2 & kwm380 and a National hro60 and last but not least a Hamurlund hq180. the fustration was overwhelming until a friend had recommended Land Air Ccmmunication, after months of trying and the equipments are going different places, finally i said fine. I call a friday morning, i spoke to a gentleman named Hal and explain my situation and he told me that he wanted to see the radios, well i took the radios the same day. When i arrive he ask me how soon do i need the equipment and i told him it was not urgent, he also mentioned about a show room but digress because i was running late. I didnot hear from him about a week, so i call him and he told me that he had diagnose the problem and needed more time because he was busy. Hal call me a week later to pick up the radio so when i got there i didn't know what to expect, he allow me a tour of the showroom and i was amaise because he had the same radio expose in the showroom that i have. I took the radios home and put them on the bench to check for specifications, and all specifications checks a hundred percent. I call Hal to congradulat him for a job well done that he is a true pioneer, it's been over two years and these equipment are still going strong. I recently purchase a Johnson Desk Kilowatt, when i receive the equipment it was not working in high power so i call Hal he came over and find some loos connectors due to shipping. If any doubts feel free to ask me Lionel KC2UEY 73.

Fantastic Service and Communications

I can't give Hal enough praise for the work he did for me a short while ago. I bought a Yaesu FT-736R from E-Bay, with the knowledge it had some problems. I contacted Yaesu for some help in repairing this rig, but they recommended Land Air to do the repair. Hal gave me some GREAT advice over the phone, so with this, I sent the rig to him to look over. I couldn't believe it. He called me after he received the unit, he discussed what he thought was wrong, and the estimated cost of repair. After I said "FIX IT", he called me later that same day telling me that it was repaired and ready to ship back to me. What service. Thanks Hal for every thing. The 736R works great and I am very happy with all the advice you gave me. I recommend Land Air to any one with radio problems to get it fixed right. Thanks again Bruce KD8KDL

A real radio doc!!

Hal has been repairing and upkeeping my boatanchors for long time. Last week on a Saturday my Collins 30L-1 linear would not tune to usual 500 watts out. I dropped the linear to Hal on that Saturday afternoon and he had it up and running by Monday afternoon. He replaced the filter capacitor and recommended to replace the entire board down the road. Hal has maintained my radios to perfection. Hal is extremely knowledgable and will get any radio up and running. Practically overnite service! Hal is a true professional and rare find. Kudos to Hal!

Known Documented Repair Fix Not Applied
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
This is a refresh of my original review where I believe that Land Air deserved a zero rating.
I took my Kenwood TS-440S to Land Air over a year ago with a very common problem; the dots in the display which was a documented VCO epoxy shorting condition. Even to this day Kenwood posts service announcements associated with this problem and the web firmly documents the issue. I was not competent to fix this problem myself and LandAir was recommended as a competent shop to fix such issues. I brought Hal my rig and after a few days he indicated that did not find the problem. Believing that maybe there was some power level issue, I drove to his shop with two Kenwood PS-50 power supplies and we benched the rig using both supplies. Sure enough the dots problem emerged. We even connected the rig using Hal's PS and again the same problem manifested itself. Hal swore up and down that he did not see the problem when he first benched the rig and further that the problem was a more elusive and intermittent issue that would require more troubleshooting and of course more money than the initial $100 estimate he provided. I was more than disappointed and decided to cut my losses and gave him the $100 cash and left..rather than spend another $200 - $300 on the repair. What amazed me is that Hal has so much gear at his home for sale and the prices for this equipment are way beyond market prices. For instance, he charges above $900 for one of his TS-440S. My impression is that Hal takes advantage of some people whom I surmise he thinks don't know any better. Perhaps his strategy was to take my rig for parts and sell me one of his "Guaranteed" rigs. Well anyway I left and he later followed up with a phone call to me indicating that he would still credit me the $100 I had just forked over as part of the overall repair which I had decided not to have him do. In addition he asked me to give him a positive eval here on eham. Well I decided to let it all go since he seemed to have a perfect record until I read the recent entries indicating some dishonest practice. My experience with Land Air left me with a very distasteful experience and I felt that since he has so many supporters I would balance this with my experience. Sorry Hal but you can't win all the time...You should have fixed the problem the first time instead of trying to shake more cash out of me.

No cost lecture
|
Time owned: 3 to 6 months
|

I brought Hal a rig that I thought was not putting out enough/scheduled power. Well he showed how the previous owner had made/used an undersized power cord and I was making heat instead of transmitting full power. I got a lecture on the above, help in putting the rig back in the box I transported it in and a quick tour of his amazing inventory of Amateur gear. I guess I was under-charged for his 45 minutes of expertise ! Les, K2TGW

collins repair

Time owned: more than 12 months

3 years ago Hal repaired a Yeasu ft3000 for me and it is still going strong. On Wednesday 4/25/09 I gave him my Collins 32S3 for repair, and it was done on Friday what can I say. I have seen many in my radio club send items to him and all have been happy with his repair work.
Just keep up the good work Hal. Thanks and 73 Joe KC2OCC
