collins 32s-3 transmitter  Time owned: 3 to 6 months
After wanting an S-Line for most of my Ham career(30 years) I was able to collect a beautiful complete station. Unfortunately there were problems with tuning the transmitter at times. I cleaned all the contacts and replaced all the tubes and still had problems.
After reading about Hal on this site I gave him a call one Saturday morning. I was intending to leave him a message for the next Monday but he answered the phone and was kind enough to listen to my story. With patience, he walked me through the tune up process and solved the problem for me on the phone.
Hal could have told me to ship the radio to him and I would have done just that. Instead he helped me on the phone and was a real friend.
If you have problems with your Collins gear call Hal. He is honest, he can fix your rig and is a real ham friend.

Beyond my expectations!  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
Shipped my 847 to Hal on a Wednesday with no SSB power output and he called me that Saturday and already had it on the bench and diagnosed. Symptom did not show for Hal and turned out only problem he could find was a loose speech processor board! Repaired and aligned to OEM specs. Unit went out following Tuesday and I received it on Friday, put on the air and worked good as new. Very pleased with the man and his service. Any future service needs will be going out to Hal for sure!

The best!  Time owned: more than 12 months
Does prompt and excellent work. Very easy to work with.

In a world where people will tell you anything and then do as they wish, Hal is a man of his word. A rarity these days.

Great service  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I bought a Collins 32s-1 recently from a fellow ham that had some "issues". I called several technicians who specialized in Collins repair and decided give Hal a try. I shipped the xmtr to Hal and he told me what it needed to bring it up to operating condition. The repairs were made in a timely manner and the charges were reasonable. Hal triple boxed everything when he shipped it back to me in Texas. I have a 75S-3 receiver that I will be shipping to him soon that is need of some TLC and tuning up.

Hal is a true gentleman!  Time owned: months
I Brought a Hallicrafters set to Hal, and when he first looked at it he didn't feel it was worth doing anything to and wasn't going to charge me for his time. However, he did end up getting it the best it could be for a very reasonable fee. He was more than gracious the two times I visited him, giving me and then my wife separate tours of his vast collection. I was able to call him with a half hours notice and he was able to accomodate me.

Hal is as honest and down to earth as they get, and I would highly recommend his services to anyone.

Hal is gracious, vastly experienced, and generous with his time  Time owned: more than 12 months
I recently took my Drake T-4XC and R4C to Hal for servicing. I left them off with him after lunch on a Monday and they were ready for pick up early the following Wednesday morning. Hal aligned the receiver and spent an entire day trying to fix the CW VOX relay on the TX. Someone had put a 6VE7 in the tube socket as per a schematic, but on the chassis a 6FQ7 was indicated in this particular series of rig. This had so misaligned the VOX circuitry that Hal advised me that he had reached the point where his bill was now half the retail value of the rig where he, honestly, advises his customers to quit. Not, however, before bringing a lead out from the grid of the VOX tube, which when grounded by a foot switch, actuates the relay and makes it possible to use the RX and TX together.

I live on eastern Long Island and don’t do city driving much, so Wednesday morning of pick up I left home at 5:30 a.m. to make sure I didn’t get lost. I arrived an hour and a half early at 7:30 am. I thought I’d just kill time until 9 or 9:15 when Hal said he was up and around. But Hal was leaving his house to get some breakfast and, instead of being annoyed with me, cheerfully asked me to go with him. Over breakfast (Hal picked up the tab) I learned how Hal had gotten his ham ticket when 12 years old and received a detailed account of his education and professional work up to the present. When we returned to his house, Hal took me into his living room and showed me where he writes, gave me a reprint of one of his articles, and showed me innumerable small rigs that he designed and built. Hal then gave me a royal tour of the corridors of the most incredible inventory of amateur radio equipment imaginable, all arranged by manufacturer and packed solid from floor to ceiling. Next came a tour of his radio operating room that contained just about every classic piece of radio gear ever made.

From all this you can see that Hal Guretzky is not just somebody who fixes equipment (he said he’d sell everything at the right price so he could travel) but a gracious, incredibly generous human being whom you would be most fortunate to run into anywhere.

Oh, and directions (you will need them). From the LIE (Exit 22) go south on the Van Wyck Expressway (Don’t confuse Exit 22 off LIE with Van Wyck Exit 12A & 12B onto LIE). South on Van Wyck to Atlantic Avenue (Exit 5). The following is necessary to navigate one-way streets (you’re going around blocks): drive east on Atlantic until you get to 111 St., make a left (one way) and drive south to 101th Ave. Make a right and drive west and another right north at 108th St. (one way). On the 2nd block at 95-15, on your right, is Land Air Communications at the corner of 95th Ave. (Another block north and you’re back on Atlantic where a right turn will take you back to Van Wyck.)

It happened that the day I picked up my rigs was my 73rd birthday and Hal had rolled out the red carpet and sent me away with his “best of 73’s.”

FT-101EE Alignment  Time owned: more than 12 months
I sent my FT-101EE to Hal for him to adjust it back to specs. He was very quick on completeing and returning the radio. The radio works great, it has much better receive than before I sent it in. Thanks so much for your good work and fast service. Hal is the man if you need work done on your radio.

Another HF 380 Repair Story  Time owned: more than 12 months
The prior review reminded me that a couple of years ago I had a problem with transmit power on my HF-380, and I simply couldn't locate it.

Hal did -- it was an original Collins manufacturing defect: a cold-soldered joint on the connection cable between -- if memory serves me right -- the driver board and the PA. Fixed overnight, which is typical of Hal, and it has served me well since.

Hal knows these radios very, very well, and his work is outstanding.

HF380 Pro Repair  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
If you need a Collins radio repaired Hal is your man. He found and fixed my problem and returned the unit in a mater of days. If UPS had not gotten in our way all would have been fine. UPS broke it. Hal fixed it again without knowing that UPS would take care of the shipping problem and returned the radio working and the broken parts replaced. I highly recommend his service and electronical knowledge.
