Follow up  Time owned: 6 to 12 months
It has almost been a year with this amp in the shack. I run it at 1200 watts on the lower bands just about every evening. Operation has been flawless. If I had to buy another amplifier again, it would be this one.

A gentle "GIANT"  Time owned: 6 to 12 months
This amp is the 4th amp I have owned and by far the best. Its construction and attention to detail reflect Ray's pride in putting together a quality product. At first I thought tuning was going to take some getting use to, but not at all. It tunes simple and straight forth just following the easy step by step instruction in the manual for the first few times. It’s built in protection systems makes this an amp any amateur can use without worry. Recently I purchase a Yaesu FT-1000 Mark V Field that will operate in SSB A mode. The maximum power in this mode is limited to 25 watts output to produce the extra clean SSB signal. With the QRO amp, I can run SSB A mode and still run full legal limit. This is a beautiful amplifier and at its price is one of the best investments you will ever make.

Takes no "back seat"  Time owned: 3 to 6 months
I am not sure what superlatives I can add to this fast growing list of satisfied users, but I'll try.

After seeing one in a friend's shack, I knew it was the amp for me. I bought one, and have since acquired a second. One for each rig on my desk. Great!

Easy tune up, highly repeatable settings, lightning fast "error protection", very quiet QSK with vacuum relay included (great feature, Ray), QUIET operation even on high speed fan, and LOTS OF POWER.

Really guys, if you don't want to lay out the obscene price for an A***a or Emtron or Acom, you really should take a look at the HF2500DX. All power you need/want and more.

Great Amp  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
The amplifier is built like a quality amp in this price range should be built. Heavy componants and 1st class wiring. Shipping was on time and packed to sustain the gorrilla's working at the shipping companies. Instructions are easy to follow. CAUTION: Make sure you have a VERY sturdy table or desk for this amp. You might also consider some help when lifting it. This is my second amp from QRO (pair 3-500z's), and I am just as happy with this one as with the first. Thanks Ray for great service and a good product.

Flawless  Time owned: more than 12 months

It has now been over a year since my purchase of my QRO HF2500DX and it has been flawless.

In use almost everyday for the past year, since I replaced my IC-756Pro (with spike problems) with a FT1000MP MkV Field I have not had a single "Fault" trip. Just solid performance, in spite of an occasional "operator error".

With about 40 Watts of drive it still loafs alone at an easy 1500 Watts on all bands 10 to 160 meters.

Hats off to Ray for a great product.

73,

John W5JON

okay big bruiser  Time owned: more than 12 months
I owned an early one in 1997. It was very heavy, looked great, and had great power.

The tuning procedure was a bit of a pain.

I had to send it back for repair once. Never did find out what was wrong with it.

I sold it to a friend and he loved it.

Superb Product  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I recently won a bid on eBay for one of QRO's HF2500DX amplifiers. I was in the market for one and luck found me. I had been studying the market for some time prior and had since zeroed in on this amplifier. I wanted a quality amplifier with power and ruggedness "headroom" as well as hardware quality, and the selection was perfect. Rest assured it is NOT a medium quality amplifier at a high-quality price!

Upon receiving the amplifier from Ray Connin at QRO, I assembled it in less than one hour and had the filaments warming up. The pictures on the QRO website do the amp justice but until you get yourself into one, you do not appreciate the quality constuction and components used in Ray's amplifiers. After being in RF communications hardware engineering for decades and a ham for over 45 years, I can say it is top notch and will please even the pickiest of techies like myself.

The tune up procedure was real quick to pick up on and works just like the manual states. I was on the air in short order with my new amp and quite pleased with it. Also, the product manual that accompanies the amplifier is VERY WELL DONE and was a real joy to work through, from setup to operation.

Just a couple of comments -- this is not a small amplifier. You do need to make some space in your shack for it and make sure you have wired in solid 240VAC service for the amplifier.

Ray's attention to the deal and getting the amplifier tested and out to me was highly appreciated and very professional. It arrived WELL PACKED and in great shape even after surving several days of the UPS Gorilla Team. I can certainly recommend doing business with Ray and QRO for your amplifier needs.

Fantastic  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
This is my 17th amp in 42 years, including VHF kilowatts for VHF contesting and moonbounce. I owned the Commander predecessor of this amp, which self-destructed when the blower shorted, putting 240V across half the primary. The fuse took around 5 seconds to blow. You will note on checking the schematic on this amp that that can't happen on the new design.
This amp easily does the legal limit. It does not even get slightly warm at all. Tunes up from band to band in 3 to 5 seconds, no problem, for SO/A contest operation. I does not keep shutting itself off, I can tune my 40 meter double loop antenna, which is cut for CW, on the SSB portion no problem at all, SWR around 2 to 2.5 to one. You can't do that on an Alpha 99! Drive is 20 to 25 watts.
This amp is LARGE! The bandswitch makes a loud CLANK on the detent. Those bandswitch contacts are not going to melt, as they have for me on some other brands.
Now what am I going to do with my two spare Alpha 76PA's?

Great amp and company.  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I purchased the QRO HF-2500DX a few months ago in the fall of 2004; I have only used it a few times on any band except 160 meters. The amp is a solid performer, with an easy 1500 watts output with 40 to 50 watts drive. When I purchased the QRO, my friend Lonnie W4FXO was telling me “it is the best amp available” now I'm sure he is correct. He sure has been happy with his. Naturally, he was my first contact on 20 meter SSB just to see how it played. Lonnie gave it a great report and he sure sounded fine here on his.

When I first received the QRO, I tried it on 20 meters and it loaded fine but when I tried to load it on the bottom end of 160 meters the open frame change-over relay welded closed. After two phone calls and two e-mails to QRO, Ray told me to send the chassis back to him; which I did immediately. He replaced the open frame relay and installed a vacuum relay, the QSK feature (which I had not purchased), added a turn to the tank coil to enhance the 160 meter operation, at no cost to me and turned it around in one day. He really went beyond the call of duty in my estimation to insure that I was a happy customer. And since the amp was a Christmas present from my XYL; he got it back to me a day or two before Christmas so I could open it on time. The service I received from Ray Connin was exceptional. Service like that is almost unheard of this day-and-time.

On 160 meters where I do most of my operating; 40 watts of drive is over one KW out and 50 watts of drive is 1500 watts out. The amp is built like an armored tank. I think this is one of the best built amplifiers on the market. If you are looking for a legal limit amplifier, take a good look at the QRO HF-2500DX. With the two 4CX800A’s this amp just loafs along at full legal limit. Depending on the band; 30 to 50 watts drive provides full legal limit output.

To fully appreciate the design and construction of this amp, you have to take a look inside. The Peter Dahl plate transformer accounts for much of the weight of this amp. It weighs about 41 pounds. Total weight is about 90 pounds so you will need a sturdy operating position to set it on. I rebuilt my operating desk while Ray was building my amp.

I recommend this amp to anyone who wants a key-down legal limit amp.
