Superb Dual Band 2M/70CM HT!
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
|
I've owned alot of HT's over the years, mainly because I am gadget hound and love to try out various gear offerings. After owning many iComs and a few Kenwoods along the way, my HT's of choice are by Yaesu. My last 2M-only HT was the VX-150 which I would recommend if you only needed 2M (or the newer VX-170 if you're willing to spend a bit more). But if you need to access 440 repeaters, go for the FT-60R. Aside from the bang for buck, the FT-60R just works so darn well. And it's size is perfect for all-around use. It's so good, I am going to put my VX-3 up for sale because I really need nothing else besides the FT-60R for HT use.

Best value in an HT
|
Time owned: 3 to 6 months

This is a great little radio. Yaesu quality, and a price you can't beat. I have absolutely no complaints, easy to program, great battery life.... and dual-band capability for less than 200 bucks. What's not to like?
I did replace the stock duck antenna with a Diamond SRH77CA. Not that there is anything wrong with the stock antenna, but the longer whip performs a bit better for the repeaters around my QTH, some of which are 20 miles away.
Five stars for the Fox Tango 60R!

awesome radio

Had mine about a month, bought used from a friend. Radio is easy to program if you're used to Yaesu menu lists. The programming software is a breeze! Great battery life. Seemingly never ending battery life on low to medium power. Standard antenna would be the only thing I'd dock on the radio. Ok for amateur bands but not very good for out of band scanning.

Great Overall Transceiver

I bought the FT-60R to use with my portable Arrow Satellite antenna and even though it doesn't work duplex, it is still good when working the FM satellites, especially the AO-51 bird. I used channels 101 to 105 to program the receive channel in 5 Khz increments to adjust for doppler effect. It takes a while to learn how to program the channels so I recomend getting the programming cable on E-Bay and the free software from http://www.kc8unj.com I can now easily program channels before taking a trip using the ARRL Travel Plus CD. I also suggest getting the AA Alkaline battery case not only as a backup but giving much longer use and higher power. Yaesu did a good job making this inexpensive radio.

Survived 40 Foot Fall
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
|
I've had my FT-60R for a few years now and have really liked it. It has the features I want and has performed well. This past Saturday it again proved its worth. I was at the top of a 40 foot tower installing some antennas. I had the FT-60R clipped to my harness so that I could talk to the guy on the ground. Somehow in my maneuvering I managed to dislodge the radio and it fell onto the roof of the building at the foot of the tower. I saw it bounce at least once. Radio still works fine. Even the antenna (standard) works fine.

4 out of 5 stars....
I bought this radio along with a 5" mag mount/39" antenna for mobile purposes. Works great! Great audio from speaker and when attached to a hand mic.
Programming was very simple for this radio. Yaesu's manual is easy to follow.
The smart scan feature was a huge plus when traveling out to CA and AZ.

I have not operated on VHF for a few years but after a tornado went through Mena AR I decided that I should at least get a good HT. So I got an FT-60R.
I have had a number of HT's, the best of them was the Yaesu VX-150, I used it for S&R, as an EC and also for fun. The FT-60R is a dual band version of VX-150.
I have had some expensive HT's but none of them were sufficiently focused on reliable communication.. small battery compartments, short battery life, not weather resistant, not tough enough, but good toys and fun.
As has been said before the FT-60R is a real HT with very good battery life and build quality, so I give it a 5. If you want a well made trustworthy HT this is it.
It needs a better antenna but the stock antenna works OK. A radio is only as good as it's antenna.

Solid HT

Purchased mine a couple/three years back with the Yaesu rapid charger to replace my (at the time) 10 year old FT-50. Also purchased the RT Systems programming software and cable.
Really love the "millions" of memory locations and the ability to group them. The programming software makes this a breeze and when I am in Las Vegas for the National Association of Broadcasters convention, for example, I have all of the LV repeaters programmed in a group.
I also purchased the Nifty Quick-Reference "cheat sheet" for it and that takes al lot of the "fun" out of trying to remember all of the various commands for the radio. I also have a Western Case Company soft case for it and I use the old speaker mic from my FT-50 with it.
Operationally speaking the radio works and works well. It rides in my briefcase everywhere I go. For the first couple of years I owned it that meant it was logging more than 100,000 air miles a year jammed in my briefcase with everything else I haul around (about 20 lbs worth) Its never had any issues and it takes a beating and still keeps going.
The audio from the speaker is "loud and clear". The RX is sensitive and seems to handle overload and IM well. I get good reports on the TX audio too.
I see lots of complaints about the use of the SNA connectors on the radio and I don't have any issues with them on either the FT60 or my old FT 50. If you need BNC buy an adapter. If you are concerned they won't stand up I have a 12 year old FT-50 that hasn't had a problem and my FT-60 hasn't either. The SMA to BNC adapters are cheap and I have a couple of them in my briefcase and the car along with the AA battery pack.
I expect that I will get at least decade of use out of my FT 60 and will probably end up giving it to my son when I decide that I can't live without the latest and greatest Yaesu HT, just like I did with my FT 50.
Its a good solid "meat and potatoes" HT that won't let you down or embarrass you when you need it most and will give you years of trouble free use.

Great first HT
|
Time owned: more than 12 months

I picked up this great rig a month before i took my Tech exam. Found it on eBay for nearly nothing as a direct import. It has amazing audio clarity, and a long life battery. As it sets, I havnt charged it in months, and yet it still has a ton of juice in it.
I can work all the local repeaters, and when conditions are good i can work repeaters over 50miles away. All on the rubber duck!
Its built like a tank, is easy to understand and operate, and is hands down a winner.
