Needs work!

I own both the hear-it speaker and the in-line module.
Both really DO help with noise.
The problem is that both also generate a nasty hum -- with or without input audio.
Don't even THINK of using either product with headphones and turning the audio gain from your radio down -- the hum will drive you nutz! When you turn off your radio at the end of the day you will definately want to be certain to kill the speaker too, or the throbbing from the speaker will continue 'til the cows come home.
I called GAP and asked about this -- certain that I had defective products. I was told that it is a known "situation." The person with whom I spoke was totally unconcerned.
So, while the products DO work, I must say I would probably not recommend either the speaker or in-line module -- I'd probably try to find another product.
I wish I had purchased neither.

Best of the Best!

Don't let an equipment failure ZERO scare you off, nor the price -- this little speaker is my most important piece of equipment! I've tried 5 other filters and none of them come close. [My wife won't listen unless I have it turned on.}
I'm buying the in-line module this week.

I've had the GAP speaker for about 5 months now and consider it to be the most important item in my hamming-experience. My wife is even amazed at how much noise it removes.
I hate to see someone give this useful piece of gear a ZERO just because it failed -- every manufactured product will have some that fail.
I can't wait to get the in-line version and move the speaker to my mobile installation.
(I've tried W9GR DSPIII and MFJ-784B -- but sold them both -- the GAP is so simple and does what I want; my IC-746PRO does the rest)

Great, When It Works But Not For Long.
|
Time owned: more than 12 months

I have had three (3) of these over the last several years. The first I bought maybe 5 years ago and it didn't have an on/off switch, so it was on all the time unless you unplugged it. It worked fine for maybe 3 years and then toasted. I couldn't even get non-processed sound through it. It was completely dead.
I replaced this about 18 months ago with a newer design that had an on/off switch, which I though was a major improvement. It worked great for about a year and then toasted, too. This time it works as a non-processed speaker, which is worth maybe $10.00, and that's all.
Shortly after I bought the second one I bought another like it for my 2-meter sideband radio. It worked great for about 8 months and it quit completely.
I troubleshooted all three of these, to see if the power was hooked up and so on so that's not the problem. They just quit working. They were plugged into outlets with a powerful surge protector (1,500 joules) so I doubt if they got hit by a surge. The first one was left on for a long time so that may have been a factor but it really shouldn't destroy it. The two others may have been left on for a few months at a time but that shouldn't destroy them, either. There was no warning that came with them about leaving them on.
At $150.00 a pop this has been an expensive lesson. I'll never own one again nor will I buy anything from this company.

Very Good Mobile Speaker
|
Time owned: 0 to 3 months
|
I have a Heil Clear Speech in the shack and the DSP works fine, but the speaker starts to limit when I have to turn the gain up, so I have added a "Sounds Sweet" speaker and the combination is very effective.
I bought the Hear It speaker for my mobile station because the audio noise was irritating the XYL. The Hear It is quite small, but puts out very clear audio and with the range of 0 - 8 adjustments, it really knocks out the background noise. I can also hear stations that used to get gobbled up in the noise. Great for a mobile station. For the shack, I like the Sounds Sweet speaker best; not sure how the combination of the Hear It (just for it's DSP filtering capability) and the Clear Speech would play together?
I wonder if anyone else has tried this?

Very nice

I got a chance to test drive this rig at Gigaparts in Huntsville, al. The radio was hooked to an icom 706. The dsp in the speaker is very good. I tested the rig with no processing, with the 706's dsp (pretty nice), with no rig DSP and just the Gap, very good, and with both rig and speaker DSP - excellent.
I personally have a Clear Speech speaker (pre Heil) and think the Gap is a bit more functional, but a bit smaller and perhaps more fragile.
However - it does a great job at reducing noise at least as well or better than my Clear Speech.
I may get one for my car.

Great filter
|
Time owned: 6 to 12 months

I have had this speaker for about 8 months now, and use it all the time in the shack as well as mobil. It does a remarkable job of clearing away noise to make unreadable signals readable. I find the build quality to be excellent with firm fitting connections and solid construction all around.
There are several filter settings, and the highest levels create considerable distortion, but those near the middle range work very well. It takes just a few minutes of experimenting to find one that is comfortable listening.
I have used it now with all 13 hf rigs I have with excellent results.
I would recommend this speaker to anyone

Not to happy

Looks nice, very small. Not what I expected after using Clearspeech speakers and base units. Lots of popping and weird noises. Works ok about 1/3 of the time. I will keep it, to proud to sell to a ham buddy.

Great sound!

I've used this speaker for only one day, but I am impressed enough to write a quick review. It seems like a lot of money for a little speaker ($150), but the DSP hidden inside is wonderful. I can't imagine using a radio without one these in the future. If you use the more aggressive DSP settings from 6 through 8, there is a lot of artifact noise that replaces the normal reciever buzz, hiss , and crackle. It sounds like space age water dripping in an echo chamber. The lower settings give unbelievable good noise reduction AND good audio fidelity. Also, on broadcast AM band it made the stations sound like FM mono! On 160M band it transformed signals that were down in the noise and only copying a few words into 100% easy to hear signals.
