Takes advantage of both dipole and vertical antennas  Time owned: 0 to 3 months

This is the classic Windom, a multi-band HF wire antenna first described in 1929 by Loren G. Windom, W8GZ in QST.

This one comes with a stranded steel wire of about 1.5 mm thick protected with PVC, 2 insulators and a 6:1 balun for matching impedances. The design is really sturdy excepting the four screws and clamps that are not weatherproof and should be protected in moisture countries.

It uses a single wire 42m or 120ft long and a feeder tapped on to an horizontal electric wire between 1/3 off-center (hence its name of off-center-fed dipole or OCF). The balun is equipped with a SO-239 PL connector somewhat protected from rain.

This models tune all HF bands between 80 and 10m, WARC included, with a low SWR and without external A.T.U.

Drawback, both wire segments being unbalanced, the coaxial feeding the wire radiates RF up to the shack. Hopefully its sustains only 200 W out.

Advantage, it is an hybrid antenna mixing properties of a dipole and a vertical, and thus offering a quasi omnidirectional pattern very appreciated for DXing as well as for local QSOs.

Due to its extended vertical segment, it picks up however a little more QRM than a G5RV for example
This drawback is however balanced, the word is appropriated, hi!, by its overall performance, that I estimate better that the one of a G5RV multi-band dipole used in the same conditions.

NB. if you want to prevent RF radiation on the vertical segment running near or in the shack, insert a common choke balun or see the Carolina Windom design (but not sold to WiMo).
