Very Nice  Time owned: 3 to 6 months
The Kenwood TS-440s/at is my first HF radio and had the dreaded dot problem when I first received the radio and than they went away and now no issues with it. I have a homemade dipole set up in my Attic about 15 feet up,(you know H.O.A. Community,) for 30 meters and a 1:1 Balun from Balun Design.

I don’t use, although I have used the A/T, I use a MFJ 945c manual tuner. It’s not a high end radio but it does work very well for this setup. My decision to purchase this Radio was made by reading the reviews on E-Ham, I am very happy with it.

It a great HF rig...  Time owned: more than 12 months
Hi, what can I say.... Itīs my first HF rigs, I still have it, and also I have a TS-480 SAT, both great HF RIGS... I will never sell them... The TS-440 , his antenna tuner itīs great... I can tune any antenna, Iīm not sure that I can tune a wire fence, but I will try it in my farm if that can be possible, but is much better than the electronics Auto Tuner of the TS-480... in that sense, the TS-440 is old, no to much technologies but a great TUNER... the TS-480 Itīs great in all the other technologies issues, but the electronic Auto Tuner have his limits... I need and antenna with a maximum of 3,5 SWR.
If you have the chance to buy any of this HF RIGS , do it... TS-440 SAT is, and I will use and Spanish expression " carne de chanco" "pig skin", that means can support anything..

My advice to new hams: START WITH THIS RADIO  Time owned: more than 12 months
Start with this radio if you are new to ham radio. I know these rigs go for cheap but they can take a beating! The built in auto tuner will tune most any antennas! The lack of crazy digital features is a big PLUS when you are getting started. When you press the power button it is on you don't have to wait for it to boot up! Also if you take care of the radio you can often times sell it for the same amount you bought it for!

I bought my for $500 but it came with SSB and CW filters, mic, service manuals, and may other extras. I have seen these radios in working condition for as low as $350.

One really cool thing I like about this radio is it will work with only 11 volts. I run my station on solar power and my batteries are a little old and some times 11 volts is all they will put out. That said you may not get full output but the radio will not just shut off in the middle of a TX!

I love my 440S/AT  Time owned: 3 to 6 months
I got the best deal ever for this radio on ebay at 325.00. It does have the button bounce problem but thats nothing. I'll fix that someday.
I just cant say enuff about this rig. I just love it and will never sell it. In fact when I die, I want it buryed with me! I have a turner expander 500 mic hooked to it and I get great audio reports every time. It really didnt like a d104.. With the g5rv jr. if I can hear it I can talk to it. Breaking into a pileup is just to easy even at 100 watts. I've done most of the mods to it and they were just too easy. I really love it when I am showing it off and I hit the voice button and it tells you the freq its on... Yes it came with the voice unit.
If you have the chance to get one, dont pass it up! Without the a/t unit they will go for about 300 to 350 bucks on ebay and 350 to 500 bucks with the a/t unit.

solid unit  Time owned: more than 12 months
The one I have now is my third unit. Sold the first one just to try other rigs. Missed it so much bought a second unit, which had the dot problem. However got that fixed sold it and still missed the unit and bought a third one about a year and a half ago. I think I'll hang onto this unit as it's a late production and works very well on all bands.

What Do You Expect For A 20 Year Old Radio?  Time owned: more than 12 months
I'm assuming the main reason anyone is reading this review is one is thinking of purchasing a 440.

I have had the unit almost 10 years and it was over 10 years old when I bought it. I had a minor repair done a few years ago and it has always worked well. The display flickers once in a while and the volume control is temperamental but I know I could get well over $200. for it on eBay now.

If you amortize the original list price over the past 20 years, it would have cost you less than $50 a year - not bad.

There are better radios out there, but there are a lot worse. If you can get one at a good price, bearing in mind it's age (and possible repairs), you won't be disappointed.

The only reason it's getting 4 instated of 5 is replacement parts are / were to expensive and it's getting harder to find a good service depot.

A keeper forever  Time owned: more than 12 months
Interesting - most evaluations are 5. The lower ones are minimal and appropiate. The bad glue in the VFO was a big mistake, but the designer would not know untill age took over.

I love my TS440/AT and will keep it - forever....

One of the classics  Time owned: 6 to 12 months
Great classic rig with good features, good receiver and a great TX audio. Never had any problems with the TS-440, never had the PLL-problem.
Great reliable and rugged radio, no menus, no bells and whistles....just a really well performing and easy to use HF rig. One of the best Kenwoods
