Microsoft Encarta alternative  Time owned: more than 12 months
This is a free HTML database that may be run through your Web browser with a net connection or from your local hard drive. To use the database locally, download the .zip file, then click on the index.html file in the Factbook folder. That's it!

In the resulting Web page, simple click the drop-down menu to select the country you're interesting in. You'll then see a full page with links to maps and other information.

The CIA World Fact Book is free, updated annually, and works with any operating system, making it a great alternative to commercial databases, such as Microsoft's Encarta software.

HINT: A simple edit to the index page, and you can change the country names in the drop-down menu to use Amateur Radio country prefixes! This means you can customize the front page for your own needs!

I give this product a solid U.S. taxpayer-backed 5.0!
