the best got better!  Time owned: more than 12 months
I note the other complaints about RFI and can state I have no problems. I owned the original ProSet( 8 years) and purchased the the Quiet Phone last year. I operate contests, DX and all modes. I run the legal limit on 160-10 and can state that I have never had RFI with the phones. The only service needed on my origianl head set is a replacent of the ear muffs and and foam pads- available from Heil. I don't think my station is special and don't understand the problems other have had.

I also operate at a contest station for CQWW and ARRL DX where we use the Quiet Phone and run legal limit in a multi single environment with no RFI problems. I'd buy them again but I haven't worn out the first pair! Now if I could just remember to turn them off and save the batteries!!!

Have to Lower My Rating  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
Since I gave this unit a "4" in my last review, I have made over 1000 contest QSO's with this headset over about 30 hours of hard operating. The "talkback" caused by even very low power levels totally wore me out. I got so tired of hearing the RFI in my headphones. If you keep the ANR circuit off, the product is fine except for the short cord.

By the way, if you want a quick lesson in ANR try this: Take your headset out in the yard with the switch off. Put your headset on. Fire up the gas powered leaf blower.... then turn the swtich to the on position. There will be no doubt in your mind that the circuit in this headset is working.

Heil made a Recr not Headphones  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I have always been impressed with Heil's equipment from the sound perspective but they missed the boat on the "Noise Canceling Feature" with this unit. I used quotes here because it’s more of a receiver then anything. Flip on this feature and you get a new monitor circuit for your transmissions.

I called Heil and they had me add capacitors to my power supply and make a choke out of several turns of Coax to try and remove a problem I did not have before I purchased the headset as any of my other mics and/or headphones are fine with my rig. The problem gets progressively worse as you move higher in the bands. It even picks up my mobile phone at less the 500mw. What I found very interesting is that when the unit is completely disconnected from my rig it still has the problem when the "Noise Canceling Feature" is powered on.

My unit is new enough to return to HRO for a refund and I will be doing just that. If it were not for the a Mic and the nice way the reverse works it would be 0/5

Interference defeats them  Time owned: 6 to 12 months
I have to agree with a previous reviewer. The Quiet phones just don't work for me. When I transmit on many frequencies I get feedback that is too annoying to bear. I spoke to Bob Heil about this and was told I must have RFI in my shack. I am using an ICOM 756PRO and have tried running the phones through a large toroid at Bob's suggestion. Some help but not enough.

Save your money. They aren't any good if you have to keep the quiet feature turned off as I do!!

operational FLOP  Time owned: 3 to 6 months
I have still been doing research on the Heil Pro Set Quiet Phone and have not come up with any real good answers to the feedback through the headphones problem. The head set is a great design and I have two other Heil Mics. I beleive Heil has fallen down on the operational design and preformance on this model and this is too bad. I hope Heil will research some improvements and cures without modifying to transcievers.
I thought this problem was only mine but I have talk to many more who are dissappointed in the Heil Pro Set Quiet Phone. So I recommend researching before buying.

Like 'em!  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I've had experience with Bose and Sony noise reduction headsets in the past (both work nice) The Heil Pro Quiet Headset is as good or better. They are increditably comfortable to wear, even for long periods. I ordered mine with the HC-4 mic element because my main purpose for these headsets was to work DX. I've experienced no EMI interference at all, even at near max legal power.

I also own Heil a Goldline mic. It has been my experience that the Heil staff are quick to respond to my question emails and very helpful. Bob Heil himself has even responded directly to my questions. Great products!

EMI Problem  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I too have an awful EMI problem when QRO with this headset. This is the only item within my station that has an EMI issue.

The noise reduction works well, and so does the Phase Reverse function.

operational failure  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I just purchased a heil pro set quiet phone and I have RF that I can not eleminate. I called Heil and Donna was some help; but when I talked to the owner of Heil he was telling me how his display or show room was rf free. He blamed Ten-Tec and other radio manufacture of the short fall claimed I had to modify the ground. I hung up on him because he seems to blame the radio manufactures because they do not adhere to his configuration. I also have talk to many hams who have the same problem and no help from Heil.
I recommend doing a little research and locate other headset with booms like WGA which you can purchase from Ten-Tec and tell them what type of radio you have and if you want mono or stero. Heil makes a great system but give zero help. I have put my heil in a box and will try and sell it at a swap meet of hamfest maybe i can get some money back. Less learned do not by heil. would like to rate them as a -10 but they have some quality in the system so I will give them a seak 2

Great audio, poor ruggedness/reliability  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
The audio of the PSQP-5 that I have is superb. And the comfort is also great. I love the phase reversal and noise cancellation options. Between those two features, I find I can really dig signals out of the noise.

A couple of complaints though. The first one which I received had an intermittant contact somewhere in the cable where it meets the left earmuff area. I sent it back and got a new one. This one though has another issue, where you have to squeeze like heck on the PTT button to make it key the mic. Many times in the middle of a QSO, it will unkey, chopping my audio off in mid-sentence. Also like someone else mentioned, the connector mechanism for the FT897 seems to have some intermittant problems as well. I haven't had to request a replacement cable yet but I wonder if that's coming.

Not sure if I'd recommend it or not. If you're lucky you may not encounter these headaches I guess. It is a nice unit if only it were more reliable.

Beautiful sound, but clumsy to use.  Time owned: more than 12 months

I've had the pro set quiet phone for a little over a year.

The audio quality is fantastic.

However there are quite a few physical shortcomings.

The Heil adaptor kit for the Yaesu FT-897 wiggles/shorts out the jack (I've bought two kits, 6 months apart, they both do the same thing -- and ended up using the Yaesu mike cord with and an 8 conductor modular inline coupler to make it work right). I have this same problem with my FT-857 too.

When the radio adaptor is plugged into the headset, two of the three wires become longer and it looks really cluttered. Adding a short 1/4" plug to jack cable made them all the same length for me.

I'm right handed, so I run my radio on the right side. Unlike their other models -- The boom only swings one way, so the cable and the control box has to drape across my lap instead hanging down to the side. Having the cable always be in the way when you are logging is really uncomfortable.

There is no auto shutoff for the unit, so it will run the batteries down if you leave it on. There is no option to take power directly from the radio.

All in all -- beautiful sounding and clumsy.
