Early DSP??

It has been four years since my initial review and I really do like this receiver; no, there is no comparison with my 7800 (how does Icom get that great "analog" sound from a digital receiver??)but I love listening to my S-1; it appears a little more noisey and not quite as sensitive as my Harris 590, Drake TR-7 and the R-9000 as well as most of my receivers, but the rejection tuning appears to diminish not only unwarranted sigs, but a lot of the noise and it does that w/o distorting a lot of the signal (which a lot of modern DSP does); not bad for 60's/70's technology: Art and his boys did a nice job; with the recession, prices are down on classic equipment, but one still does not see many of these gems for sale. Only IMHO. Thank you for reading and the band width. Phil

A Treasure!

Time owned: 0 to 3 months

Spent $1200 plus shipping for a very nice early 51S-1 with white meter face. Early S/N with white meter face. Arrived very deaf, and was sent off for repairs at a cost of $1100. Now a true treasure, excellent coverage and performance, for a tube set. I just love these old S-lines when peaked to their max. A true investment, but expect to pay for service when buying one as they are getting long in the tooth, unless recently serviced.
