|
Beware parts not available on new rotors G-5500
|

Called yaesu for a replacement transformer for the control box. As expected was a discontinued part. Going on an assumption that they probably haven't made many changes to the control box, I asked for a transformer for the G-5500 rotor which they currently sell today (5/2008). Guess what, same part number. So they are selling equipment that they don't readily have parts for. After some time speaking with one of the techs, he was able to conclude that the transformer from a DX series of rotors should work. Beware, what other parts are discontinued on currently marketed goods from yaesu?

14 years and still going strong

This rotator is still working fine after 14 years outside with 22 element CPL 2M and 20 element CPL 70cm antennas hanging on it. The only problem I've had is the power switch jammed on it this year, but I was able to take it apart and reposition the internal contacts to get it working like new again.

Great medium-duty rotor

I have had the G-5400B for twelve years now. The AZ portion of the rotor is mounted in the rotor base of a US Towers MA-550MDP tower and turns not only the large satellite antennas but also a HyGain TH3 Mk3 HF tribander. The EL portion is mounted at the top of the outermost (largest) telescoping section of the tower and holds a heavy duty 12' crossboom with large satellite antennas (KLM 2M22CX & 435-40CX) plus other smaller satellite antennas.
The only problems I've had were my fault (overtightning the mast bracket) and a burned out meter lamp in the control. I really thought I'd have to rebuild the AZ rotor long before this. The fact that it is mounted in the tower's rotor base and not together with the EL rotor at the top of a mast must be part of the reason it is holding up so well despite the fact that it is turning the whole tower with both satellite and HF antennas. Count me as a happy camper.
