Description: The SDR-14 is a 14-bit software defined radio receiver. It offers a broad range of spectrum analyzer and demodulation capabilities. The hardware samples the whole 0-30 MHz band using a sampling rate of 66.667 MHz. The digital data from the ADC is processed into I and Q format using a direct digital converter (DDC). The I and Q data is then sent to the PC for processing using a USB 1.1 interface. All of the demod and spectral functions are done on the PC side.
One of the most exciting features of the SDR-14 is the ability to record band segments of any band to hard drive in realtime. This is done at a rate of 52GB/day for a 150 KHz wide segment. The stored file contains everything that happened in that segment of the band for the duration of the recording. The fidelity of the file is superb with over 96dB of dynamic range. The recording can be played back at any time with full tunability and choice of demodulation modes. The recording can also be analyzed for hidden signals and carriers.

The SDR-14 is also a very powerfull Spectrum Analyzer and Panoramic adapter for communications receivers. It can display bandwidths up to 30 MHz. You can even see the WHOLE HF band at once on a waterfal display. The display capabilities outperform any of the commercial panoramic adapters currently available.

Superb piece of equipment  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
For those who are familiar with the many spectrum display and analysis tools that can be had for a wide range of prices the SDR-14 holds a place of it's own in the market. With a 30 mhz real time bandwidth it's a poor mans real time spectrum analyzer. Using the IF output of one of several common receivers or better yet a high quality mixer and signal generator the SDR-14's 30 mhz real time window can be extended well up into the GHZ. The software that comes with the unit is extremely effective at capturing and recording time tagged signals for later analysis. I don't know of anything near the price that renders the performance.

You won't regret purchasing one of these units.

excellant product - both a good rx and valuable test equipment  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I have to say that the SDR14 is a very good receiver. Not suffering from the usual issues that conventional receivers do, means that brick wall filtering etc is all possible in software. I have tried the RX out on HF with a datong AD370 active antenna and it performs very well - you can see interesting wide band modes, ionosphere sounders, frequency hoppers etc. I mainly use the SDR with other receivers, coupled to their IF output for monitoring satellite and microwave signals. With the SDR its easy to look at a few 100KHz of spectrum and look for a very weak signal from a satellite for example. In some recent testing whilst looking for the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (http://www.uhf-satcom.com/mro/) at 8.4GHz, I can honestly say that without the SDR I probably would have never found the signal. Looking at the audio output of a receiver with say Spectran or other FFT tools is ok but you see a 3KHz window - with the SDR I was watching a couple of hundred KHz looking for the carrier, as there were frequency uncertainties due to doppler etc. Once the signal was acquired with the SDR, it was tuned to centre frequency, then re-peaked, just about allowing the carrier to be heard in SSB bandwidth.

The front end software is good but needs a little time to familarise yourself with the features. If frequency accuracy is important to you, there is a calibrate routine which you can use to correct the timing of the internal 66MHz clock. I think my unit was 63Hz out when compared to a 10MHz GPSDO. I leave the unit powered up all the time so as to ensure thermal stability. As a piece of test equipment, its also very useful for measuring NF, SNR etc when you are building preamps or down converters.

Another interesting possibility is that of receiving >30MHz signals, but in this instance, you are advised to use good external BPF's to eliminate any possible image signals. The SDR is destined to be tested in a 1296MHz contest next hear, again coupled to the IF of the transceiver - it should allow us to see the other stations 200KHz either side of us, and to look for weak stations so as to work them etc. Overall I would say this receiver is brilliant, and its one of those things that once owned, you cannot do without. I have found the support from RFSpace also very good, and questions on features / useability are answered very quickly. The SDR14 Yahoogroup is equally good, with many users having a lot of experience with the product and therefore are able to share their experiences.

Excellent  Time owned: more than 12 months
I'm one of the original beta testers of the of the SDR-14. I love this receiver, Pieter and Moe did an excellent Job.
I've participated in the testing of the SDR-14 phase noise, IP3, dynamic range, etc. and they are much better than most multi $K tranceivers.

Mine is an alpha version with HF, 6M and 2M and I love it.

I also use it as spectrum analyzer and it beats most HP/Agilent out there. Narrow band meassurements are superb.

I wish the SDR-14 direct range could be from 0 to 3GHz and had more than 150Khz of realtime data out to demod wider modes.
