Great rotor!!
|
Time owned: 3 to 6 months
|
I have owned this rotor since 9/2008. Its a great rotor that has automatic breaking. Just pretend its an old T.V. antenna rotor and turn the dial! I am using it to turn my Mosley PRO-67B which weighs 110 lbs. It works like a charm!
Just to mention, the rotor comes with 100 feet of cable. I'm mentioning this as I did not know that when I ordered it and bought extra cable.

Strong & Reliable

Time owned: more than 12 months

When I first opened the box I thought "This ain't no Tailtwister!". And it's not - it's better than the HDR-300 I had before! The 2800 has worked flawlessly for over three years with over 300 lbs of antenns and a 21 foot tall mast on top of it (and a thrust bearing). Great rotor!

Rugged

Time owned: more than 12 months

My G-2800DXA has been up for 4 years now. Since I am a very active contester, this rotator has been used way more than the average ham would. I have made 55,000 qso's in that period and the rotator plays like its brand new.
Mine is turning a M-Squared 40M3L, a good sized (30 ft boom and 47 ft elements) 3 element 40m yagi, plus a 3 el SteppIR. It hasnt missed a beat.
Very rugged unit and I recommend it.

Still Awesome after One Year of Use

Ok here's the update as promised. As the previous call sign of KD5SRL, I wrote a review on the G-2800DXA. This review will reflect my review of this rotor.
First of all, it has works flawless to turn my Hy-Gain, TH-11. This is one huge antenna and the G-2800DXA has not flinched at this monumental duty of turning this beast! The only problem I had was "self inflicted". I dropped a screw driver on the face of the clear plastic dial (bezal). Don't ask me how. I've already had the "I told you so" for the XYL about that. It took Yaesu Rotor Parts in California a while to find the part number. Got it, replaced it... good as new.
I added the Idiom Press Controller, allowing computer control for only $156.00 including S&H. Save your money and go with Idiom Press instead of Yaesu's ($500+) if you want to use a program like Ham Radio Deluxe (HRD) with the "Mapper" feature to chase DX Clusters and turn the beam to the direction of the DX stations; with the click of a mouse on the map. Stay with me here... I'm not getting side tracked. You owe it to your self to have this option if you're going to spend this kind of cash on a high end rotor.
Secondly, I use a US Tower HDX-555 (motorized) and it fits perfectly on the rotor plate. No cable problems at all. I use Industrial Communications Engineering (I.C.E.) surge / lightning arresting protection. Yaesu will charge you about $100.00 for connectors to the rotor and control box. I purchased some high end cable, pulled it through conduit, cut and spliced the ends; one in the shack the other in a weather tight control pannel which houses the ICE products. No problems here at all.
In conclusion, If I had it to do over again, it would be this rotor without reservation. Don't forget to spend the extra and get the Idion Press controller if you use a computer. HRD is a free download and absolutely works seamlessly with the Yaesu G-2800DXA & Idom Press Controller. With a rotor like this... my only addition I need now is Ham Radio Insurance to cover a direct lightening strike.
