After several years, let all the smoke out!
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
I just experienced what a number of other folks have had, an IC-7000 that let all the smoke out!
I've never had a reason to go looking for reports of this sort on the IC-7000, but I see that a number of folks have had run-away thermal events on the PA board, as well. I've had this unit for several years, almost always in a mobile environment, and in this particular situation it was under the rear seat when it flamed out.
I'm very lucky it didn't set the vehicle on fire, the way the fan on the unit was working, up until enough of the PCB board burned up to kill power to the unit. In all that time, none of the fuses blew, neither the one on the radio, nor the two 30A fuses in the power cord.
I'll be calling Icom this evening to arrange for repair, but this experience has shaken my confidence in leaving this radio in my vehicle, connected directly to the battery as it is, even though it is protected by the required fuses, both in the engine compartment and at the radio.

No problems in 32 degrees celcius
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
|
Just back from operating as ZD8RAF in Ascension Island, in the South Atlantic. The radio performed superbly, no overheating even thought the daily temperature was 32 degrees C. I had done the Bob Nagy Mic Mod some time ago and received many compliments on the audio from the rig. So overall, no complaints, no overheating and no smoke. Superb little radio which allowed me to work 1058 stations in 64 countries on 10m, over a total operating period of about 12 hours.

Great

I've owned this since it was released. Never had any overheating issues. I work 100% CW at 50 to 100 watts into a G5RV at a mere 30' above the deck. QSOs last forever at times, and I've only found the unit gets warm. Filters, passband, AOK. Beats the 746 pro by a little bit, easier menus than the 703+.

Great RIG in a small package.
|
Time owned: more than 12 months

I had one of these for several years and operated it without any issues at all.
Just got back into ham radio after a few years away with an Icom IC-7600 and will be buying an IC-7000
How on earth can you review something you have never used?
EHAM should police these reviews and REMOVE the reviews from people who DO NOT OWN them.

Solid Little Rig
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
I've owned this radio for exactly 2 years now and am
still amazed by it's versatility and all they managed to pack into such a small box.
It replaced my IC-730 bought in 1980 and was my primary rig until this one. The 7000 is the first menu driven radio owned so there was a slight learning curve but got it down fast and can navigate
quickly through the functions without confusion.
I use SSB, CW, and Digital modes without any problems and have not encountered any of the overheating problems I saw in some reviews.
The back of the rig gets no hotter than the 730 did and that went 30 years OK.

An amazing little rig
|
Time owned: 6 to 12 months
|
|
Ive had my IC 7000 for over 6 months now. Bought it brand new in the box. This little rig never ceases to amaze me how well it hears. I constantly get questioned about what mic I use as the transmit audio is fantastic..only to be met with disbelief when I tell them its the stock hand mike that came with it. No mods, just bone stock. The menu system takes a little getting used to but once you operate it for a while it becomes second nature. I have a 756 pro so the menus on this rig just came naturally. It does things my pro doesnt and many things better than my pro. For the money you cant go wrong.

nice heater for winter
|
Time owned: 3 to 6 months
|
The rig were working well on HF and up to the IF-DSP design. However , it would become VERY hot even just in receive in my 18 deg celcius basement . Wanted to try Airmail , put the power down to 25w and make a few try . Radio became hot to the point I could not
put my hand on it. The internal fan was useless.
And one day , POOF ! Everything went in smoke.
Even if my radio was still under warranty ,I decided
to take the loss and buy something else.

Ticking Time Bomb
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
Not to beat a dead horse. I loved my IC-7000 until issues began popping up. Mine never broke but it did get extremely hot during CW operation. I placed a tiny computer CPU fan on top and this helped the situation quite a bit. The receiver is acceptable but it does have some annoying white noise again on CW.
The the straw that broke the camel's back was when I tied to connect a linear to it and the amp-key output occurred 8ms before RF occurs. Unfortunately, ICOM doesn't provide any means of adjusting this delay (Elecraft, Yaesu, and Kenwood have adjustments for this, and TenTec has a 15ms built-in delay). There is also a problem with turn-off delay with the IC-7000. I.e., it unkeys the amp 5-7ms BEFORE RF goes away. This can also be a problem with aPIN-diode switch. I tried a QSK switch and this did not work. The only thing that worked was using a foot switch and this was not the permanent option I was searching for. So the permanent option became the getting rid of the pretty little radio with all the options.
I guess the Icom people never thought that anyone would be crazy enough to try to connect a linear amplifier on CW to their little gem.
The little radio looks really pretty and has all the bells and whistles anyone could wish for but is not a well thought out little radio. I guess Icom radios are not being designed by their marketing department.

Cooling issue....
|
Time owned: 6 to 12 months
|
Shame on Icom. There is no chance that they don't know that this radio has a serious cooling issue, and yet it went to market with a known issue. This is an example of bad engineering going to market. If you buy an IC-7000 and use it long enough, plan on it getting too hot and failing. I've run a FT-450D and a FT-857D mobile and never had the either radio get hot and no failures. The IC-7000 always gets hot and it will fail you sooner or later.
Avoid this one, new or used. You'll be sorry.
