GREAT RIG
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
Had this rig(275H)about 2 years.I has GREAT ears & transmit audio. It did NOT hear as well as my Kenwood TR-751A which I sold to buy this rig but it was VERY close.I am an ICOM MAN but I just bought another KENWOOD TR-751A because of it's ears. The 100 watts output is a plus & I would be VERY happy if I owned the 275H again. It does EVERYTHING a GREAT 2 meter ALL MODE should.A++++ rig & ICOM dependability! }:>)

Superb performance
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
I purchased my IC-275H about 4 years ago and have been extremely impressed with the TX and RX performance. My primary use is SSB but have also used it on CW and FM. The receiver is crunch-proof and great for contesting. My version of the radio has the Data Level adjustment instead of Passband Tuning - that is the only thing that could make it any better. The mode scanning of memories is a nice feature for FM use. This radio is on anytime I am in the shack - sure wish I could find an IC-475H to sit beside it in the shack!

Mine is the IC275E which is the European version of the 25w rig, differences with the 275A are very slight. I have owned this radio for roughly 10 years.
This is a radio I had wanted for a long time before i bought it, mine is stock other than having CW filter, I trawled around to get a tidy example with the PBT instead of the data-level control. (I believe a copyright issue was the reason that Pass Band Tuning was removed from later models although it can stil be fitted).
Very pleased with the radio, it has performed extremely well on SSB and FM. It drives my tetrode amplifier and produces a good narrow clean signal. I have only had one negative criticism on air, it seems the Icoms speech compression caused a little spreading. In fairness to the radio I was beamed straight at the station that observed it and we were 60+ over 9 signals each way, he had previously been impressed by the narrowness of my signal before I ran the compression. He used to have one of these radios himself and says he ran external compression as he had observed the same with his rig.
The controls that "pop out" for adjustment and then can be pushed flush with the fascia are a deterrent to accidental fiddling in multi-operator contesting and similar, the receiver is sensitive with a good dynamic range.
The display is very clear, and the controls logically laid out, the internal speaker sounds quite good as it is bolted securely to a diecast heatsink assembly, all in all a very pleasant radio to use. For FM use CTCSS encode as standard is another plus.

Excellent overall

Bought the Icom 275H in 1992, it has been a great weak signal and all around 2 meter base rig. Specifications second to none. Check 'em. Is it perfect? No, but there is/was nothing better than the 275H when it was new and there still isn't anything better. Had to send it in for alignment and got new panel bulbs and a lithium battery after 13 years and thousands of hours use. The 100% full duty cycle rating says it all, the x75 series of Icom Radios is superb.

NONE BETTER

I have tried most all-mode 2 meter rigs over the past 20 years and have found no hotter receive than the 275H. Some say it is a bit pricy for a single band rig but they are the ones who haven't tried this rig. Coupled with a receive preamp, it doesn't get any better than this. The 100 watts output is a real bonus and find most times don't need the amp. Audio reports are consistantly favorable and the compression really works............. if you can find one, buy it. You will not be disappointed.

Built like a brick......

I got one of these cheap on ebay (275H), it had been dropped or hit really hard. The tuning knob was jammed so you could hardly move it, rit and memo knob were bent also. I took the front all apart down to the bare frame, hammered it back flat, put it all back together and it works great!
This thing took a really (REALLY) hard hit and wasnt a total loss, nothing really broken, just bent. On the air its great, fantastic receive, and when you talk, people listen (they have no choice!) Its heavy, like an HF rig, a REAL radio, not 2 chips and a couple of buttons. They still bring a decent price, but it is cheap when you consider the caliber of radio you are getting. I fear we wont see radios like this anymore due to the cost of production, this originally cost as much as an HF rig ($1200+ I think), nowadays people get HF thru 440 for $750 (FT100D).

Terrific 2m all-mode

I have the IC-275H without the passband tuning ("Data level" control instead). This little radio works great - good RX sensitivity, although there are a few birdies around 144.070 - .100. Overall, great capability, and all modes work well. Mine will not quite make 100W output for some reason, but at the RX end there will be little difference. Has many features of larger HF rigs. It's probably my last VHF all-mode rig.

Best receiver I have heard to date

I've had 3 different all-mode 2 meter rigs and the 275H is by far the most sensitive, responsive, and selective receiver I have heard...it really digs out the signals with or without the pre-amp. Talk power is right on the money, 105watts on FM and 100-125 on SSB/CW, couple this with a beam and you have a potent DX combo. Am I happy, you bet! I now have 2!

Great 2 meter radio
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
I have the 100 watt version of the radio. It has a great receiver, with the cw filter it has good selectivity. It drives my linear to full output. The audio is excellent on SSB. I have the ICOM preamp, and it hears exceptionally well. In my opinion, it is the best all round 2 meter box ever
built. I have had about every 2 meter rig ever produced, contested with them, used them on EME, etc., and this radio really fills the bill. It is too bad that it went out of production.

Best 2meter multimode I have ever had.

The 275A is the 30 watt modeli Is very convenient to operate and performs excellent. I have had mine since 1991, and it hasn`t skipped a beat. I use it with a 200 watt brick, which makes it a formidable station. I installed the 250 hz. filter, which makes it fantastic for weak signal cw. Is a classic and still commands a high price on the used market. Is a keeper. Will keep mine until it dies.
