'Phone operator...Dream to operate!'  Time owned: 6 to 12 months
Radio purchased new at Dayton 2008. I enjoy the radio very much operating phone. Updated as CPU and EDSP software revisions are made available. This radio, like many modern radios, is a dream to operate. If you are a "casual amateur station" like me I'm sure you will enjoy your FT2K-D as well. Thanks to Yaesu for releasing all the new updates.

OK for Many  Time owned: more than 12 months
I so wanted to love the FT-2000. It is an absolutely beautiful radio with ergonomics that I thought were second to none. This look, the feel and quality build, and great features compelled me to purchase one to supplant my 14 year old FT-1000D figuring that it should be superior to a decade and a half year old analog radio – certainly one of the best of all time. Unfortunately, I was wrong.

The first thing I noticed almost immediately was the FT-2000’s higher internal IMD generation especially CW on 160M and while contesting or DXing with pileups close by. This from a rig that was 17 years and two generations newer than the old? Yes, the issue could be mitigated with judicious use of attenuation and RF gain reduction, by why should that be needed so often? Yes, the FT1000D suffered from this anomaly, too, but to a much lesser degree.

The other disappointment was that I was experiencing operator fatigue from listening for extended periods of time. The resting audio noise and the AGC action apparently from the DSP (which is now well documented by Mr. Sherwood) forced me to take more breaks from the radio than any previous radio I’d owned. To say I was disillusioned with Yaesu is an understatement. I had expected better – perhaps erroneously.

Those disappointments aside, for casual operation, the 2000 is one fine rig. I understand the new AKA MKII upgrade fixes the AGC action and perhaps the fatiguing audio, but it can’t fix the IMD problem. Inasmuch as I am primarily a CW operator, I probably notice this more than a phone op.

Yaesu missed the mark with this rig. With Mr. Sherwood, Mr. Rauch and the ARRL for years publishing RX specs between radios and manufacturers, Yaesu had plenty of notice to supervise their design criteria. Who was managing the store?

Finally, I was appalled at constant and incisive infighting and lack of professionalism on the ft-2000 Yahoo reflector.

In all other respects, the FT-2000 is wonderful – it just wasn’t for me. I no longer own it.

Perfectly satisfied !  Time owned: more than 12 months
Own this great rig more than 12 month. After studiying the manual and a learning process that takes a little bit time,im perfectly satisfied with
the Yaesu FT-2000. OK,Yaesu released this rig not perfectly and it took some software-upgrades until it comes to this high standard.(not a good strategy from Yaesu)
Since the PEP-Upgrade (highly recommended) i think you will not find another rig on the market in this price segment. It was a great rig before, but now this is outstanding (my humble opinion)
Try it and you will feel it.
Best 73

Alfredo.. upgrade the firmware and EDSP  Time owned: 6 to 12 months
Alfredo, what version of the firmware & EDSP are you running there?

Take a look at the reviews in the PEP-2000 version of the FT-2000 reviews. This makes it a very different radio as can be seen by the reviews....
http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/7981

IF you have already updated your firmware and software to the latest version then I am extremely surprised by your review.

If not, update the radio and you will find a completely different radio altogether.

All the best, Chris... ZL1CDP

Very BAD!!!!  Time owned: more than 12 months
Problem areas:
1.Using narrow filters >500hz increases the band noise to near the point of pain. 50hz filter rings so badly, it's useless.
2. 3 khz roofing filter has no benefit for signals within 3 khz of desired signal.
3. Tuner has the most narrow range of any I've seen, amost worthless.
4. Low level audio hiss from AF amplifier most obvious with headphones and quiet annoying.
5. Noise Reduction (NR) does nothing when narrow filtering is selected.
6. Noise blanker non effective.
7. CW signals outside the DSP passband tend to produce clicks which actually are not there. Same goes for the IC-PRO series.
8. AGC overshoot causes a slight thump at the onset of cw characters...Very tiring to listen to.

Very Good Transceiver  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I recently purchased a one year old FT-2000D with the latest 01-09 update. I had read the reviews on the radio and decided to try one. I think the reason that some operators have rated it lower is that they have not read the manual enough and that they have not taken the time to make the adjustments correctly. This radio demands that an operator experiment with the settings to achieve the desired results. There are so many DSP options which require delicate adjustment. My comparisons for it are ICOM IC-756PROIII, Kenwood TS-950SDX, Yaesu FT-950, and Ten Tec ORION II. It compares very favorably with these radios in slectivity and sensitivity. It does excel in transmit power and audio. It seems that the radio improves with every update.

new EDSP  Time owned: 6 to 12 months
You need to get the latest EDSP version 11.39. Download the new software and install just the EDSP.

They seem to be listening to the users and already have a new fix out. Thanks Yaesu.

FT-2000 much improved after the firmware upgrade.  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I just bought the rig about 10 days ago with much trepidation. At first I liked this radio but I was still not sure I bought the right radio. I am not going to list the alternatives you probably already know about them. The receiver is very good. It has a pleasing sound that is easy to listen to. I was disappointed by the DSP noise reduction and notch filters, so I was happy with it but I still questioned if I did the right thing. Then I upgraded the firmware. WOW what a difference. I won't go into detail it would take way too long, but the it is like a new radio. If you have a 2000 DO THE FIRMWARE UPGRADE! I upgraded to EDSP version 11.29 and CPU version 1.42 for reference. You can go to the Yaesu web site and download the software: http://www.yaesu.com

I bought the CT-119 cable. Then I found that it is only one of the cables you need. The CT-119 will only reprogram the CPU not the EDSP firmware! For that you need a 9 pin RS-232 straight cable. SO after doing the CPU I sat down and wired up some DB9s and made the cable. RT systems sells a USB to serial adapter that works well with the rig and the CT-119. It even worked on my 64 bit Vista laptop and it's cheap.

Once you do the upgrade you will notice that they made some very nice and well thought out changes to the display and other things. The Bottom line here is now after the firmware upgrade I am very happy with the rig and I am convinced I got the right radio. I'll follow up after a couple of months and we will see how I feel about the radio then.
