In a class of its own

I have two XTS3000's. They are by far the best hand held radio I have ever put my hands on.
There is a learning curve with all motorola products and the software/parts can get pricey, BUT you LEARN so much about radio from just learning to program one.
If your serious about having the best HT gear your money can buy, the 3 and 5k's are the way to go.

Great Radio

These are great radios, both the UHF and the VHF versions. Once you have used a commercial radio, you may not want to go back to an amateur HT. While it is true that you have to use a computer to program these radios, with 255 channels (on the keypad versions) and a little planning this is not a serious limitation. Since this radio is currently still supported by Motorola, you can legitimately obtain the software from them. If you expect to re-program the radio more than a couple times, or if you have more than one radio, it may be a sensible alternative to repeated trips to a Motorola shop to have minor changes made.
Like other recent Motorola radios, all of the radio's features are governed by the firmware. When buying a used radio, you should ascertain the "flashcode" to make sure that the features you want are already enabled. Not all XTS3000's are "flashed" for P-25 digital modes. Some are analog only. While it is possible to add features later, it is usually a lot less expensive to simply shop for a used radio that already has what you want. Also, if buying a UHF radio make sure that you are getting a "R" band split as this version covers the ham band. Fortunately, this version generally less expensive on the used market than the higher band split. Check out batlabs.com to learn more about these and other Motorola radios.
Also, when starting out with one of these radios, give serious consideration to the Impres series of batteries. These cost slightly more but have a chip in them that talks to the Impres charger. This enables the charger to monitor the battery status and to automatically condition it when needed. You can also leave the radio, or a spare battery, in the charger without cooking it. All of this greatly prolongs battery life. Shop around and you will be able to find Impres batteries and chargers for a lot less than list, but learn to read Motorola battery date codes. This is especially important if you are buying "new old stock" batteries on line.
Finally, if you are looking for a less expensive alternative to the XTS3000, or simply prefer a different form-factor, the somewhat older Astro Saber is a comparable radio and uses the same software to program it. Impres batteries are available for this radio as well. Reportedly, factory support for the Astro Saber series may terminate at the end of 2007. This will make it harder to obtain parts, but also may mean that there will be more inexpensive radios on the used market.

Great Radio

Top notch radio capable of analog and digital modes. There are a few Apco 25 Amateur repeaters to experiment with, plus it's a great Apco scanner. Uses JEDI accessories, so if you have a MTS, JT series radio, the audio accessories can be used. I have a UHF model that covers 440-512 mhz.

Great rugged digital radio

I have a Model II UHF (403-470) radio that I use a lot. I have several other Motorola radios, and this one is just about on par with the rest. The processor is a little slow on start-up, but the display is nice and large. The XTS3000 is a little larger than other Moto radios I own, but it makes up for it in features. Be sure to get a XTS with a good flash code (APCO-25 enabled) so you can play with many features of this radio.
