Great refurbishing

Time owned: more than 12 months

I had Kurt overhaul two old prop pitch rotors and to add Mast to rotor connections. Kurt does an outstanding job - he really understands these rotors and how to make them into very good, reliable units. I still use my old M2 controllers and the combination is great.

When only the best will do!

Time owned: 6 to 12 months

After suffering a tower failure about 18 months ago, I set about replacing my tower and antenna system. This included replacing my M2 rotator which, like the rest of my equipment, was destroyed when the tower cable broke.
Over the years, I had formed the opinion that prop pitch rotators were homebrew novelties that were used to turn massive arrays or whole towers. I was also of the opinion that these contraptions required elaborate home brew control boxes and lots of patience to actually build and maintain.
My opinions began to change when I stumbled across the K7NV webpage. After talking to Kurt, I discovered that a prop pitch device can be made into a very reliable, powerful antenna rotator if properly modified. I also discovered that the folks at Green Heron Engineering made a control box that was designed to work with the voltages required by the aircraft quality prop pitch motor.
Kurt is an engineer and a perfectionist. The quality of his rotators far exceeds anything that is offered by any of the more traditional rotator manufacturers. Keep in mind that any mechanical device that goes on an airplane is already of the very highest quality. Kurt transforms the prop pitch apparatus into a work of art that is specially designed to rotate a radio mast. In doing so, he puts in an incredible amount of craftmanship and detail into the product.
When coupled with the Green Heron control box, the results are fantastic. I installed my prop pitch rotator in a US Towers HDX-572MDPL tower. I shipped the rotator shelf up to Kurt and he modified it to fit the rotator. The actual installation into the tower went without a hitch and as soon as I got the wires hooked up, the rotator immediately worked like a charm.
The Green Heron control box is really a treat to operate. The point and shoot feature is easy to use and works terrific. Jeff at Green Heron even provided me with a custom display.
I am using this set up to turn a 4 element SteppIR along with an M2 five element six meter yagi. All of this doesn't even begin to challenge the prop pitch rotator. I doubt that I could ever hang enough stuff on my mast to cause it any problem. This is indeed a big boys toy.
Needless to say, I am very impressed with the K7NV rotator system. Quality and customer service are also the best. If you are looking for a powerful, well built rotator system, I would give Kurt a call.

Fantastic support

I recently purchased a K7NV/Green Heron Engineering rotator controller, and then decided I wanted to get a replacement prop pitch motor for the one I had. The one I had was improperly modified when I got it, and I wanted one built right. We have 11 months a year of winter here in Vermont, and going up and down the tower is a job you want to do as seldom as possible.
First, you should really look at Kurt's web pages on prop pitch motors. Clearly, he knows more about these devices and how to adopt/rebuild them for amateur radio use than anyone else I can think of. Compared to the other stuff commercially available today, a prop pitch is built to aviation standards of 50-60 years ago.
Second, his level of customer service is stellar. On two occasions I have had to call him for "hand holding" on an installation. In both cases, I was able to page Kurt and had him on the phone talking me through the problem within 30 minutes.
A K7NV PP motor, combined with a K7NV/Green Heron prop pitch controller, is the only way to go. Yes, it may cost more initially than the presently available commercial junk, but I would rather own a rotator built by Curtiss Wright fifty years ago, and gone over by an expert, than one built yesterday by MFJ. (Sorry Martin. You make some good stuff, but not up to Curtiss Wright standards!)
I wish the eHam rating scale went above 5.

Rugged and Reliable !
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
I live in high desert of Northern Nevada.
The desert breeze hits 90 - 100 mph a few
times a year - 60 mph is not uncommon any time
of the year - Highest wind in last 5 years were
gusts to 135 mph !
Needless to say this is hard on ROTORS and ANTENNAS.
After a few rotor failures, I was ready to UPGRADE.
I went with a small PROP PITCH from Kurt K7NV
and it has proved rugged and reliable. Most hams
have prop pitch motors that can take NO vertical
load - Kurt goes that extra mile ( and some ) and
my small PROP PITCH can easily take 1000 pounds
vertical load - it's a brute!
How much is your time worth? making repairs,
enduring rotor failures during contests , etc
Kurt offers small, medium and large models -
my " small " model is a real BRUTE !!
I recently upgraded to his new controller
( co-designed with Green Heron especially for PP ). If you seek QUALITY and DEPENDABLITY then I recommend the " K7NV Prop Pitch System ".
It does not hurt that Kurt is a Mechanical Engineer by vocation - add to that decades of experience building and maintaining Ham radio stations and you have a valuable combination of skills - "hands on" skills !
Two thumbs UP !!!

Like a new rotor
|
Time owned: 0 to 3 months

Kurt does a complete rebuild of a prop pitch motor, stripping it, replacing or rebuilding bearings, sandblasting and painting the case, building a new top seal etc.
The result is essentially a new prop pitch, only better because it is set up for use as an antenna rotor.
It is a fine replacement for my old prop pitch which has been up for 20 years.
