A real value

I bought both a VHF01 and a UHF02 from
ZARES. Please see my review of the VHF01
for common information. My UHF02 is
serial 2726.
The UHF02 tests well on the bench. The
transmitter produced 3+ watts out and the
receiver sensitivity was what we expect of
modern receivers, about 0.12 uV for 12 dB
SINAD.
It's tempting to divert the UHF02 into
commercial service, but please don't. The
transmitter is not type-accepted in the U.S.
outside the 420-450 mHz. amateur band.
This radio now ties its VHF brother as the
best new $66 radio I've owned. For what
it is, the ZARES UHF02 is a remarkable
value.
As with the VHF unit, Chris Day has full
schematics and xray PCB drawings of the
radio on his website.
Highly recommended.
