Fantastic Feed Line Tool
|
Time owned: 6 to 12 months
|
When used hand-in-hand with a good antenna analyzer (I'm using a Timewave AntennaSmith) a full feature TDR will provide a real look into your coaxial feed line's losses & problems.
Distances, once set up to match the coax, were within inches, and every connection showed on the screen. The actual loss is calculated from the deterioration of the reflected signal to termination.
Working at a major conest shack the TDR picked out instances in the many feeds lines where the coax wasn't performing. One case roughly 180 feet from the shack a flaw in the original line's dialectric has allowed high power to break down the cable for a several foot area. Another appears to be possibly ice damaged coax from a leaking below grade, but shallow, conduit.
Several line installing firms have been selling off 1270's and 1270 variations that are in excellent condition. Usually they go for about 1/2 of new cost.
Only word of caution is there are Twisted-Pair ONLY versions of the Riser Bond "yellow box" units. They are less useful, though I am told they can be fiddled into doing coax measurements.
Riser Bond has an excellent Training Briefing at:

Again the 1270 is not in itself an antenna analyzer, but rather is an additional tool to look at yoru coax from the shack to the first balun/unun or antenna.
