| Reviews Summary for FT-817ND BY YAESU |

Average rating: 4.5/5

MSRP: $589.00

Description: The world’s first self-contained, battery-powered, Multi-mode Portable Transceiver covering the HF, VHF, and UHF bands! Despite its incredibly small size (5.3" x 1.5" x 6.5"), the FT-817 delivers big performance! Its next-generagion PA puts out five watts on all HF bands, plus the 50 MHz, 144 MHz, and 430 MHz bands, on all popular operating modes: USB/LSB/CW/AM/FM/Packet/PSK-31/RTTY. Now the 817 legacy is even better with the introduction of the FT-817ND, which includes coverage of the U.S. 60-meter (5 MHz) band, and it also includes a 1400 mAh NiMH Battery pack (FNB-85) and NC-72B Charger!

I have had my FT-817ND for well over a year now. This is one neaat little rig, a do all go anywhere rig for those of you who like QRP operation. I took my 817 to Mexico last summer on our family vacation. Once I had my permit,(received my permit about 5 days before we left),and ALL necessary paperwork off we went. Only had a couple of opportunities to use my 817 while in country. My first attempt was in Mexico City, in the evening in a park. Got it all set up and it started to rain! A few days later we were in Veracruz we had the afternoon to ourselves, so I took my 817 the Diamond HV-7A mobile antenna a friend loaned me, goit set up, had the 20 meter coil for the diamond in place. It took me a few minutes of tuning and I wound up checking into a net in Ft. Pierce, Fl.(I live approx. 10 miles from this station, in Vero Beach, Fl.)It was a net I had checked into many times only with 100 watts and talked to guys in several states. But my little 817 did it with only 5 watts and an antenna only about 6' off the ground.
IMHO, the Yaesu FT-817ND is by far the most versatile QRP rig to hit the market. Will I ever get rid of it? Not in this life time. 73 all hope to hear you on the bands.

Great QRP radio

This was the first HF radio I purchased after I got my Tech. license. I wanted a radio that covered the HF bands and the bands that I was currently able to use with my Tech license. The 817ND filled my requirements. Since I have owned this radio I have used it twice in the field using just battery power. It works fine using internal batteries and a GR5V antenna plus the MFJ portable all bands antenna. At home I use it for SSB contacts on both 2 and 6 meters. People can't believe how good the radio sounds. It is easy to transport and then get on the air quickly. I use the W4RT battery packs and recharger. A General licensed ham used it during the local club's "mini Field Day" in late October and he had many contacts using the 817ND with a car jump starter unit for power.
