ARRL Handbook Reviews: 2 Average rating: 4.5/5 MSRP: $59.95 HC, 44.95 SC
Description: The ARRL Handbook for Radio Communications
-- THE standard in applied electronics and communications.
The 2008 ARRL Handbook for Radio Communications uniquely serves both amateur experimenters and industry practitioners, emphasizing connections between basic theory and application. This 85th edition is both a useful introduction to radio communication and a source for answers to questions about every aspect of the state-of-the-art. Topics include Amateur Radio licensing requirements and operating activities, fundamental and advanced electronics and communications concepts, radio propagation and antenna theory, practical projects, repair techniques, references and much more.

The Handbook includes descriptions for new and emerging wireless technologies involving digital signal processing (DSP) innovations, and radio applications utilizing software and the internet. The book is filled with valuable references, practical examples and projects.

Reads like a dictionary  Time owned: more than 12 months
Has the important material, and is a good reference source.
Older editions from the 1950'2 and 60's were better written.
The newer edition has a very dry writing style, and seems to be written for engineers.

ARRL Handbook w/CD, Ham Academy v5.5
The ARRL Handbook is available at many libraries (not known if libraries have the CD). It is an excellent reference. The CD is searchable and well indexed. You do NOT need the current edition to learn most of what is needed for the exams. If your library or other sources have an older edition, use it. Also, obtain and read a copy of the FCC part 97 rules (ARRL).

Ham Academy. What better evidence than I passed (aced) both the Technician and General exams on the first try on the same day, September 30, 2007. I also read the appropriate sections of the ARRL Handbook. Official question pools: Technician: about 400; General: about 485. The question pools are available from the ARRL web site. Also, see my review of Ham Academy.

OCT 30, 2007
On Oct 28, 2007 I Passed (aced) the Amateur Extra Class exam. Most of the credit again goes to Ham Academy with appropriate sections of the ARRL Handbook. I also downloaded the ARRL Extra Class question pool (almost 800 questions) to aid in learning the math necessary for section E5 of the question pool. I learned ALL of the math necessary from the ARRL Handbook.
