Good rig considering its age
|
Time owned: 0 to 3 months
|
I have just obtained an FT75 complete with AC & DC power supplies and external VFO.
The rig is great considering its age, and all reports state the audio is amazing considering there is no signal processing of any sort.
I have worked a number of stations both VK and overseas, and find the rig very easy to use.
I have a number of other rigs both solid state and hybrid, and I feel the best feture of the FT75 is its simplicity.

Early Yaesu mobile rig
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
Back about 20-25 years ago I bought a FT75 from the ham father of a ham friend of mine (both are now lapsed licenses).
It came with the FP75B mains power supply/speaker unit and the errmm DC75B? mobile vehicle power supply/speaker unit. Yes that’s right, it needed a separate supply unit for mobile use, and unlike most mobile rigs this rig had valve finals.
The standard rig was crystal controlled, with a VXO for some frequency agility and had 3 crystal frequencies per band. An optional external VFO unit was available but I never owned that so can't comment. Given that the rig was intended for mobile use this wasn't the killer that one might first assume.
The transmit audio was ok from most reports and the receiver was adequate (given the vintage of radio we are talking about), but the lack of frequencies was very restrictive.
If you see one now for sale (I haven't seen one for ages), then keep in mind that they are old and really are collectors or curiosity items now.
