Excellent quality for use with my K3!
|
Time owned: 0 to 3 months
|
Purchased online for $45 which included shipping. Build quality is excellent and what a difference in audio quality from the cheap chinese made Icom HM-36 Mic I was using!
Crystal clear full range audio which I noticed right away with my K3's DVR...
Mic bias voltage is also obtained directly from my K3 - things couldn't get any better then that!

work fine for me

Time owned: 3 to 6 months

This set works fine on the FT-1000D radio...I have to turn down the processing and mike gain, which isn't an issue with me..very comfy for long contest work...I have several other makes of mike/headsets and for the price these do a very nice job...can wear for long periods ie. over hour and a half and with glasses and seems to be ok...consider, the price is right..

Problem with headband
|
Time owned: 6 to 12 months
|
|
I purchased the CM500 just over 11 months ago and gave it a 5 star review a few weeks after receipt. I am still very happy with the headphones and the microphone. Unfortunately, the headband did not hold up. It is a flexible mesh that is secured at each end and on my unit it became detached at one end. The headset is unusable when the headband flops around. Since it is just under a year old I am going to send it off to Yamaha for warranty service. It should have lasted much longer.

good , but connections fragile

I bought a used one about 2 years ago. Very comfortable, good sound and voice. Walked away from computer several times and either jerked it off my head or the lap top on the floor. Cord finally gave out from abuse. I ll buy another one.

Best Bang For The Buck

Having used a Heil Pro Set Plus in the past, I was pleasantly surprised how much lighter these headphones were.
I've had some great audio reports using the headset to drive my Icom IC775DSP . The mic drives the audio up a lot more than the HC5 in my Goldline.
Power for the electret is easily picked up from one of the pins that is normally used to connect any mic to . It was real easy to make an adaptor lead for the 775 .
It seems a pity that you cannot buy these in the UK. I was fortunate to have one shipped over from the USA. $44.99 is not a lot to pay for the Yamaha CM500 . Especially when an equivalent Heil Pro Set comes in at around £150 or $240 . The Pro Set Plus is currently £225 that's $360 .
No wonder they don't want anyone selling these headsets in the UK , Heil would hardly sell anything if these became available.
I had a listen to some music on my hi fi & the headphones sounded well on that also.
These will be a keeper in my shack for a long time. I know a good few ops who have these for the Elecraft K3 . They plug straight into the Elecraft .

Better the BM-10
|
Time owned: 6 to 12 months
|
This headset is sturdier that my Heil BM-10. The Heil boom holder broke twice during normal use. I am down to my last spare holder and when that goes (it will) it gets trashed.
The YAMAHA gets good signal reports on my Kenwood TS2000(X) and my Alinco DX-SR8T.

Not as expected

Solid construction. Pretty... Although- Problems interfacing with Kenwood TS-570DG. RFI. So, took it to another hams home and tried it on a TS-590. Same results. RFI. Utilized Heil products for years and never RFI issues. The CM-500 is going back. Fun experiment, tho. Thanks, but I'm sticking with what works for me. The infamous ProSet!

Great match to the K3
|
Time owned: 0 to 3 months

I like this headset better than my usual Heil BM-10. Although the Yamaha is heavier, it feels lighter and is easier to wear for a whole contest. It mates to the Elecraft K3 perfectly: the 1/8" stereo plug for the mike plugs in to the K3 rear panel mike jack -- turn on the bias in the menu, and it is ready to rock. The set comes with a 1/4" stereo adapter for the phones and works fine with the K3. This one is a keeper, and the price is right!

Highly overrated
|
Time owned: 0 to 3 months
|
After reading all the reviews and recommendations, I went ahead and bought this CM500 headset.
I must say for the price its highly overrated. The build quality is cheap and its performance is no different from any other good quality gaming computer headset.
I have several computer gaming headsets which I compared with the Yamaha with. In every case when monitoring my signal on a SDR receiver I got equal or better results with the other headsets.
Electret microphones are much of a muchness, and depending on the brand of headset you will need to use a EQ to get rid of the excessive bass response. I am strictly a DX person so no need for ESSB excessive bass rubbish audio.
I bought some very cheap headsets at the computer show with much better quality headphones and booms. These performed very well, I got a better "communications" quality audio with the cheaper units. The more expensive the headset the more I had to use the EQ because of excessive bass response on these headsets.
Dont rush and get caught up in the Yamaha headset product hype. Try some good quality gaming headsets from the computer shop it will provide equal or better performance for a lot less money.
I tested the headset on a K3, K2 and a FT5000.
The FT5000 produced the best quality DX audio because if its excellent EQ and RF SPEECH processor.

A Real Bargain!
|
Time owned: 0 to 3 months

Have owned the Heil Pro Set Plus for a long time; mostly used for SSB contesting. (Use Bose Quiet Comfort headphones for CW DXing and contesting).
The Heil audio is excellent, but the headset becomes uncomfortable over the course of a long contest. Fellow contesters unanimously recommended the Yamaha CM500. I was skeptical of the Yamaha because it was so inexpensive. It just had to be junk! Well, I ordered one anyway (from B&H). For $44, including shipping, if it was junk, it could go into the trash can.
To my surprise, I far prefer the Yamaha over the Heil, which costs around 5X as much. The Yamaha is much lighter than the Heil, and far more comfortable.
The Yamaha RX audio is excellent. So is TX audio. Here again I was pleasantly surprised: received many unsolicited reports of great audio.
(The Yamaha mic is more sensitive than the Heil; simply reduce the mic gain).
The Yamaha CM500 appears to be well constructed, but time will tell.
This is an excellent headset and quite a bargain, IMHO.
