Fun to restore and a worthy receiver for its day  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I recently restored one of these for my uncle. He bought it new in 1959 and used it for about 15 years until it started smoking. It sat in the attic from then until June 2008 when I looked at it. After recapping (it uses MANY tubular and electrolytic capacitors) and retubing (the metal tubes were all gassy), I turned it on and was greeted with a cloud of smoke(!). This came as a bit of a shock (I thought I had covered everything). I went online and learned that these receivers suffered from shorting IF cans. The silver in the open silver mica caps bleeds and eventually shorts the high voltage primary coil pins to the secondary pins, leading to downstream component failure. Some quick voltage readings confirmed that IF can #2 had shorted. I temporarily substituted a coupling cap for the can, replaced the burned out resistors, and the radio came to life. I located another IF transformer, installed it, performed an alignment, and put everything back together. The resulting product worked very well. The absence of an "S" meter is a nuisance, as well as the lack of a front-panel antenna trimmer. I concur with other reviewers that receiver technology has suffered from diminishing returns. Properly restored, the S-108 can provide a lot of enjoyment.
