Consistently defective replacements  Time owned: more than 12 months
I purchased the GPSmap 387 for APRS applications with external power and also without external power since it has its own attached lithium-ion battery. I am now on the forth replacement unit, just as defective as the first three. Here’s the history of my experience:
The FIRST unit did not power up as it came out of the box from the vendor. The vendor exchanged it. The SECOND unit did charge its battery for a while as specified in the Owner’s Manual, until it failed to recognize its own battery. The message was “Battery Missing”. To save me the hassle of returning the whole unit to Garmin, I bought a new battery, hoping that it was the faulty part. Wrong. It had also developed a defect in the display screen. Send the unit to GARMIN. They send a replacement, the THIRD unit. That one did recognize its battery, but it failed to charge it. The battery drained even while the unit was turned off. The message was “Charge Complete”. Took pictures of the display with the depleted battery graphic and send them to GARMIN. They replaced the defective unit with the FOURTH one. That one went through a charging cycle just once, then no more. Again it shows a graphic of a totally drained battery and “Charge Complete”. I’m now out of the price of the original unit, a replacement battery, and three postages with insurance. This is a one-thousand-dollar boondoggle. I've given up on GARMIN.
