I replaced my DX Engineering 4:1 Unun with a Balun Design 4:1 Unun. It was much easier to install on the Vertical plus it gets better SWR's on the higher frequencies. Overall I am completely satisfied. Dealing with Bob was extremely easy. If you are looking for a good vertical Unun, please call Balun Designs.

Bob K5ZR and his business deserve an extra gift from Santa this Christmas. I had him wind a custom Unun for the feedpoint of my 160M Inv-L with elevated radials, as I was having some reactance issues. The first one was good, but we both felt it still needed a bit of adjustment.
On a weekend, Bob asked I e-mail feedpoint and shack impedance measurements, and a picture of the Unun's internals. He researched the issue in Sevick's writings, and promptly e-mailed back a suggested simple wiring change for me to make via my picture, which I promptly did.
Imagine my pleasure to find that his idea worked, yielding a 1.5:1 SWR at the feedpoint, and a 1.0:1 in the shack after further impedance transformation from my 85' of LMR400 coax. The 1.5:1 bandwidth is now 1800 to 1840 in the shack. Plenty good enough.
Not many builders and sellers of Amateur radio equipment would have stuck with the experiment until it was done. Bob did.
Thank you and 73 Gary NL7Y

I ordered a 4:1 balun for a vertical antenna. Bob wrote me back saying that after extensive research and talking with manufacturers, they decided that an unun was a better design for that configuration and he had just tested one that he could send me. I got it quick and it is really a well made piece of gear. Too bad we don't have more "made in America" like this! Thanks Bob!

I purchased a 1.56:1 ratio UNUN from Balun Designs. I was looking to match my 50ohm feedline to my SteppIR BigIR vertical that's sitting on top of a large radial field creating a very low feedpoint impedance. I contacted them on a Saturday after inquiring about the possibility of N connectors instead of SO-239's, and received a "No Problem" reply within an hour. The UNUN was in my hand by Wednesday afternoon. Being inquisitive, the first thing I did was what I do to any new accquisition ... I take it apart! Inside, it's beautifully fabricated. The windings looked like a photo example for a textbook; perfectly spaced and immaculately soldered. The lid of the plastic container has a weatherpoof gasket, and makes a tight seal. Performance-wise it works as good as it looks. I now have a near perfect match, and the N connectors eliminate the need for the adapters I was using on a different manufacturer's UNUN. Good communication, can-do attitude, unbelievable fast service. I highly recommend Balun Designs.

High quality

I purchased the 4:1 / 1:1 combination unit for use with my OCF 80-10. The quality is absolutely tops!
Upon opening the box, I noted that everything was where and how it should be. And, NOT hidden with a bunch of potting gunk. Good weather seal and high quality hardware.
Unlike other baluns that have been here, I figure this one will he here for many years. My medium power (800 watts) will not melt or burn-up this balun.
Next OCF I build will get another of these balun combinations.

75ohm:50ohm transformer great for dipoles
|
Time owned: 0 to 3 months

I just purchased a 2KW unun with a 1.5:1 ratio from Balun Designs. I have a 160 meter dipole fed with 50 ohm coax. It had an acceptable SWR at resonance of 1.55:1. It's 2:1 bandwidth was 105 Khz. I have a tube type amp and the manufacturer recommends operating below 2.0:1 SWR. So I thought I might try to increase the bandwidth with a better match between the probable 72 ohm dipole impedance and my 50 ohm feed line.
This 1.5:1 unun fit the bill. It is very light weight and I just attached it to the present Budwig HQ-1 center insulator with a PL259 double male adapter and put my existing RG8 on the 50 ohm side of the unun. To my pleasant surprise, the SWR dropped to 1.05:1 at resonance and the 2:1 bandwidth increased to 160 KHz.
The manufacturer responds quickly to e-mails and shipped this item the same day I ordered. Fit and finish and overall quality look really good. I highly recommend Balun Designs’ products.
