Description: Alinco has created a new 2 meter HT that is reasonalbly priced, small, and is easy operate. The DJ-175 has an alphanumeric display for easy memory management or standard frequency display. It has an ergonomic design that's "user friendly" and the 5-watt output rechargeable battery is standard as well as the cup charger with red charge LED.

Great little handheld

I have had many issues with my current handheld due to the complexity of programming. I can program with the book but not in the field during parades and other support events where changing frequencies is required.
That is no longer the case. The Alinco DJ-175T has solved this problem. After programming just one repeater I was able to repeat the process without the manual.
Size, price and ease of use should make this rig a best buy for any Ham.

I must agree with N6BOB's comments. For the $100 I paid, it is a nice little handheld, but not having a dedicated volume control can be a bit of a pain. Also, the radio seems to be fairly susceptible to intermod. Fortunately, I'm usually not in a high intermod area, but there are places I go where it can be a problem. Aside from all this, it is a good radio for the price.

I mostly concur with previous review....I own two of them and my two complaints: the OEM antenna isn't very efficient (typical of some HT antennas) and the OEM batteries barely last 2 years.
Other than that, solid well-built radio

Easy to program and bargin priced 2M HT

Mine was ordered from Universal Electronics and they were running a special extra $5 off. It took about a month to arrive as it was back ordered. I was not told that it was out of stock until the day after ordering on line.
The radio was charged overnight and then programmed using the included clear manual. Other than a few grammatical errors it is easy to read and follow. This should be a good rig for any ham looking for a nice HT that is simple to program at a bargin price. The case is plastic and feels like it can take a 3 foot drop but no more. I haven't tried it. The included hand strap is a plus in keeping the compact rig in my hand.
Pro: 1. Compact and has a good feel but labeling of keys is on the case and looks like it will wear off quickly.
2. The included 700 ma battery holds a good charge and seems to last a long time.
3. The audio is clear on receive and transmit as well.
4. My old Yaesu HT speaker mike works great with it so I could us an existing accessory... a plus.
5. The programming software is available at the Alinco site for free downloading. Cable is extra.
Negatives:
1. It is hard to adjust the volume and squelch because one must use one of the special keys to send that function to the only knob that rotates on the top of the rig.
2. In the dark one must find the Function key then the lamp key to turn on the lamp to be able to adjust the volume/squelch/power/memory or other functions... the lamp only stays on for 5 seconds ...this should adjust so that every time a key is pressed the lamp comes on like my Icom T7H HT an Yaesu HT's.
3. It is a frustrating rig to use in dark areas... the keys are small so one must remove one's gloves to make any adjustments. The lamp is dim and the labels are not on the keys but on the black case and not in white but in a low contrast color. It just seems the rig is not quite ready for prime time but close.
The rig is well worth the money but with a few changes it would be really top notch. It is plastic not metal like the the Yaesu VX-150 or tough plastic like the VX-170. The display is large and easy to read most of the time. It has a handy battery charge indicator which works well, telling one when to recharge.
I just finished my 4th QSO, a rather long one at 1/2 hour, and the battery finally gave out with a chirp. Quit a bit of transmit time for such a little battery.
When cars drive by it is annoying to try to turn up the volume... first the * key is pushed then vol knob is activated... want squelch? Then the # key is used to activate control knob... then the reverse to turn down the volume... # + turn nob...yes I know that is just an extra step but try and do it at midnight in below freezing temps with gloves on... when on other rigs one just turns the volume knob... The new Yaesu VX-8 is the same way...what are these designers thinking...I know it saves one pot and knob on the top of the rig, thus shaving a few dollars off the price... I guess it is worth it but for just a little Alinco or Yaesu make an HT with these controls standard.
I would like to give it a 5 but for the above Negatives I must give it less.
This is such a great buy and sounds so good but it has a few nagging issues driving down the rating. If you buy one as an extra HT or as a new primary HT you really can't go too wrong.
