Good for the price  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
Just received the latest vesrion with DTMF.

Bottom line first..
Cheap, disposable? dualband handheld - Just buy it and use it till it breaks!
For roughly AU$130 landed, this little radio is hard to beat!

Pros:
* Price!!
* Excellent RX audio quality and very loud.
* TX audio is good, maybe a little 'basey'.
* Desktop charger supplied with 240V AC charger (Australian configured plugpack) and 12V cig lighter lead that works well (for the drop in charger only).
* Very cheap batteries and accessories.
* Good RX and TX performance right across the band.
* Nice clear LCD display (good blue/white backlighting).
* Reasonable number of memories. Enough for me anyway.
* Supplied with serial prog lead (free software).
* Lighter than my FT-60r.
* Fantastic CTCSS decode/counter function.
* Voice announcement of functions (if required).
* Narrow TX&RX FM for those 'other' frequencies.
* Good battery life.
* Good belt clip.
* Supplied rubber duck works surprisingly well.
* White LED torch is a nice touch.
* FM radio works well in stronger signal areas.

Cons:
* Build qulaity is not quite on par with the Icoms and Yeasu's of the world.
* Dual Display can be confusing and may lead you to TX on the wrong freq if you are not very careful (be very careful when you have 'oher' channels in the second display (although the second display can be turned off to prevent this from occurring).
* Turning repeater shift on for the first time can be 'tricky'. Once learnt, it's not difficult (helps if you read the manual).
* The S meter reads full scale even on weak signals. Really doesn't work as an S meter.
* Does not do dual receive. The two displayed channels (V&U, V&V or U&U) are really just dual watch. i.e When a signal is received on one,
you will miss activity on the other.

Other thoughts..
Will be interesting to see how long the keypad & tactile switches last.
The SMA connector is reversed to the Yaesu. So it may be difficult to get a diamond or similar replacement antenna to fit (uncomfirmed).

Good Product For The Money  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I have the KG-UVD1P, and I sold my Alinco and bought this radio. I am happy with the HT, the programming was a breeze with the software and USB cable, so what if you have problems with programming with the keypad.
I entered 25 repeaters in the software and loaded the radio all at one time, and it works great, several features that you don't find on the american made HT's, I am happy with my purchase. For the money you get your money worth with this unit.
I would buy another one.

Pretty Cool!!  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
Yeah, I also bought one and was really surprised at the receive and transmit. I like the blue display and a volume knob on the top. For the price, it is worth every penny!!

Very nice for the price.  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
Okay I ordered one of these Wouxun KG-UVD1P dual band HT's, it's the newest model and does have
DTMF. I meet a ham that had a KG-UVD1P and played around with it. So I ordered one, hey for the
price I couldn't say no as they included software, USB cable and car plug. Unlike other Chinese
HT's I have seen these are a 100% better. The manual I can read and understand unlike most others.
Very easy to use, has excellent transmit and receive audio, able to get into the repeater 22 miles.
Now the bad not really bad but odd. Someone please tell me what type of antenna connector this is,
it's not SMA so what is it. 2nd and a little funny it came with a hand strap but no were to install
it unless you use the belt clip.
I still have to give it a 5, wish it had wide band recieve but for the price it's just very nice.

Great for the price, but...  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
For a lousy 84 euro incl p&p you have a fantastic dual band handheld with desk and car charger.
Best modulation of all chinese handhelds, easy to program with free software, lot's of features (some you will never use). But there are also some con's:
no dual receivers but dual standby, switch from memory to vfo not in a wink of an eye, no-dtmf.

The new model UVD1P now has dtmf, but for owners of a UVD1, it's NOT possible to do a firmware upgrade. Come on Wouxun, don't treat your customers that way!!

Some Very Rough Edges!  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
This review is for the KG-UVD1P, the P being the newest model with DTMF

I have had extensive experience with several Chinese built handhelds, and find this one has some really good features and some really bad ones.
Its weaknesses are:
1. Almost impossible to programme from the keypad. Could not get the memory to hold repeater offsets and direction. The latest manual is not correct here, and the entire procedure very frustrating.
2. To switch from VFO mode to memory mode requires entering the menu, maneuvering to menu item 27 and then several more key presses to complete the job. Very cumbersome and completely unnecessary. However, the vast majority of handheld use is in the memory mode, so once programmed it is relatively easy to use, but definitely not intuitive.
3. This is not a true dual band radio, and has only one VFO. However the ability to monitor any two frequencies the radio can receive be they VHF-VHF, VHF-UHF, or UHF-UHF is a real nice feature. Keep in mind that when a signal appears on one frequency, the other is effectively muted.

On the plus side:
1. The radio has excellent transmit and receive audio - the best I have experienced in any Chinese radio.
2. You can provide names for the memory channels, but again programming this from the keypad is a real nightmare and again the book instructions do not work properly.
3. Solid and high quality construction is employed, and a step up from brands like Jingtong and Feidaxin.

If you do buy one of these be sure and purchase the programming cable and software. I downloaded the software from the Wouxun site and found my Kenwood programming cable worked with this radio. Programming using the software and cable is a snap and the only way to go with this radio.

Compared to other Chinese radios I believe the design is reasonable, while the firmware and operating procedures make it far less than a joy to use. You really need to keep the book handy with this one.

All the best,

Rob

KG-UVD1 - for dayíly use but no dtmf build in  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
got mine 2day - looking for pinout of audio for speaker and mic connection also as for the programming cable. Who has found the programming software which I couldn't download from manufactors site.
Not so easy to handle and user guide needs some times to understand. espacially when symbol for disabled tx is on. dtmf is not on board - in so far useless for echolink if you do not have an external dtmf-unit.

Love This Radio!  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I rec mine a few days ago and at first it was hard to program. But after reading the small oper manual It was to time cosuming to program by keyboard on the radio. I did down load the software to program the radio and to my suprize I had the programing cable all along, From my Kenwood TK240G. So I was very happy to see it was alot easy with the software,and for the cost you can beat it. I am going to buy one more and get rid of all my Motorola HT. I can wait to see when they come out with a mobile rig. Thanks WOUXUN!---Martin(N5WSU)
