Alpha Amplifiers   Time owned: more than 12 months
For the past five years I have been operating the CQWW and ARRL DX contests, both CW and SSB, from a major multi-multi contest station in west-central Wisconsin. You probably know the one I am talking about: 18 to 20+ towers ranging from 75 to 200 feet in height, 8 operating positions, all with full legal limit amplifiers, single band stacked yagis on 10-20, multiple rhombics at 100 feet, four-squares on 80, full-sized vertical on 160, and on and on.

I have been licensed over 40 years and have always heard of the mystique of Alpha Amplifiers, but I had never actually used them before operating at Paul's Multi-Multi contest station.

I am blown away - the Alphas appear to be indestructible. In the heat of a contest with guest operators who have never seen any of the equipment before, these amplifiers receive a fair amount of operator abuse: Hot switching of antennas, running unaware of a high SWR, and any number of other conditions.

These amplifiers are like that E***Ready rabbit - they just keep on running and running. They are amazingly robust and I have been very impressed with the quality of the construction of the amps as well.

At my home QTH I own and use another manufacturer's amplifier and I can definitely see the difference in quality and robustness. My next amplifier will definitely be an Alpha.

To paraphrase the company: "Ask the ham who runs one" - you can't go wrong.

STILL AWESOME  Time owned: more than 12 months
This my second review (first one was in 2008) of an awesome amplifier. I have owned this amp for more that ten years. With the exception of one 4CX800 and a fan failure, it has had no problems. I always look at the newer Alpha amplifiers, but I am so content with this one that is pointless to change. It gives full legal power out, on all bands with 40 watts of excitation, and is very quiet. I also have a Kenwood TL-922 and an Ameritron ALS-600 and while they are fine amps, my nod goes to the 91B. IMHO, the best amp is the one that YOU like to use, regardless of the manufacturer. For me, it is the 91B. Enjoy the hobby.

Semper Fi,

Alpha 91B  Time owned: more than 12 months
Purchased when initially offered, was on a waiting list for over 6 months and to this date was never sorry of this purchase. Never had any problems and it just keeps working. The new Alpha owners are also dedicated to the original amps and their owners- great group for anything you may need or have a question about.

Great  Time owned: more than 12 months
I bougth 2nd hand amplifier and I have use it for a more than a year and mostly in 48h contestīs. Not excessive noise and easy to tune it. Whit 30w RF input you will get around 1Kw.

I had little problem whit the vacuum relay circuit, sometimes not switch properly and the amplifier comes to fault state, you will not damage this amplifier, the protections circuitīs work really well.

Fantastic Amp !  Time owned: more than 12 months
I've been using my "Bulgarian Alpha" for about 3 years now without any issues. Quick and easy to tune and right on by the numbers. Still capable of legal limit with <50w drive and a KW of headroom from the original tubes. The previous owner sold me this beauty in order to upgrade to an Acom 2000a and based on my experience with amplifiers made by the folks Sofia Bulgaria I'll most likley do the same some day.

Great product, reliable, and excellent investment  Time owned: 6 to 12 months
I have owned several UK manufactured hf and vhf amps over the last ten years but gave up on my last "challenger III" amp after it had let me down so many times, especially on 160m at the start of cqww contest. It had to be more or less totally redesigned and modified heavily to make it work reliably for any length of time. I had an acom 1000 for a while prior to that which had been reliable at 400w for three years before a Ģ100w repair just out of warranty. I have used 91bs at various contest stations in the past and had been impressed with its reliability and built in protection. One came up second hand (rare event) at a reasonable price (even rarer) and only two hours drive away so I bought it as the owner was an experienced service engineer and he had just replaced the valves in it and done all recommended mods to it. Twelve months on and I can safely say I am very happy with the amps performance which has been faultless throughout major contests - it just sits there and does its job, quietly and cool with no effort. Now I just need to save up to buy an Alpha for my favourite band 6m! Great job guys.

it's an Alpha  Time owned: 6 to 12 months
several of my friends own "Arc Welders" for amps
they have little or no protection

the 91b is not an Arc Welder
it is a powerful tool that has great safety features that keep it healthy

after all it is an Alpha !!!

I love my 91b if you find one snap it up, you will not be disappointed

Alpha 91b is a great affordable amp  Time owned: more than 12 months
I have had an Alpha 91b for at least 4 years and it is fantastic. I have tried about everything to kill it and its auto cut off features save me every time. I am a contester and using a sheet of paper with settings I am able to tune the amp very quickly. Recommend it.

ALPHA 91b  Time owned: more than 12 months
I purchased my ALPHA 91B used in '03, looks and performs like new. The amplifier has the original 4CX800A tubes and still puts out legal limit+ on 10-160m with 45-50w input. The 91b is a very dependable and absolutely solid performer.
