Fabulous!

Time owned: more than 12 months

Hi there again. I've owned too many radios, and my friends still bug me about it. So I've kept this one waaaaay longer than the others, and I can't really see myself getting rid of it. This is my third review of this rig since I purchased it about three years ago. I know that these rigs will start becoming long in the tooth in a few more years, and that the Yaesu service department isn't really giving much support.
Nevertheless, the filtering ability of crystal with DSP continues to amaze me. This is just one solid rig with a great sound. I have the Inrad IF mod, and the Yaesu 2.0 SSB filters in it. Very lively reciever!
Recently I've become more involved in CW and the radio filtration seems to shine even more.
Most everyone feels that their radio is best for them. Considering the price, I feel that it is an unbeatable value, strictly for HF.
Have fun

This is my primary station radio and has worked great any problems. I also take it and use it as our station radio for the local ham club on Field Day. It has worked flawlessly in all modes for Field Day the last two years.

Decent performer, but...

I bought this rig new in Feb. 2006, one of the very last rigs available since production ceased. It is a solid radio and has good performance. It does not have as nice/quiet receiver as the Ten Tec Corsair II or Orion II, though. I got compliments on the transmitted audio. The auto tuner never balked at the load, although I was using a tuned antenna to begin with. It has nice audio - I had the external speaker, and the audio filters in that were ok. A couple peeves I had was that the display never got as bright as I would have liked it. In higher light conditions it is hard to read the display. This was the case even with the display brightness on high. I also didn't care for the layout of the subreceiver controls. Otherwise, it was fine. BUT...Yaesu is terrible for product support, from the parts to their 'take-it-or-leave-it' attitude. I sold the rig when I heard Yaesu no longer were supplying replacement final transistors on a flagship radio just two years prior. I e-mailed them - took 2 weeks to hear back - and in a non-professional manner told me - like so many others - you are on your own and find a parts radio to gut. WHAT?!?!?!? This is totally inexcuseable! A month later I got an e-mail from Yaesu - all on non-professional e-mail accounts - that they were getting different finals from Japan in a month, but if I was interested, 'I' could pursue it. No offer of "Hey, we will get you the info as soon as we can." The original finals were manufactured with materials that were recently banned from use in newly manufactured goods, so there was a period where no replacement finals were available. That did not alleviate Yaesu from bending over backwards in trying to accomodate their customer's (or now, EX-customer's) needs or concerns. They have released a couple debacles as of late (first batch of FT-2000's; now the 'Performance enhancement' package for the FT-9000 to correct for the poor design issues, this being done at their expense - that should tell you volumes right there. This is sad; I was a fan for 20-some years, and I feel betrayed. The cash went for a Ten Tec Orion II. My Corsair II can still be serviced and I can get parts for it, too, a 20+ year rig. I want a company to stand behind their products when I spend big bucks. This is not meant to be a hatchet job on Yaesu, just to inform you of what I and others have experienced. This radio can stand on its own merit; unfortunately, it will need to since Yeasu isn't willing to stand behind it adequately, or its customers.

A great buy in today's market

I have had the 1000MPMK5 for a while, filtered up and it is an amazing radio. My only gripe is I wish it would operate off DC instead of the cumbersome AC/DC power supply you have to drag along with it.
FOr the price you pay for a used one, well, well, worth the money for a top of the line radio with exceptional performance!
Who says you have to have new?

I have the FT1000MP Mark-V now...what a great tranceiver!
Comparing with the FT990 (i had before this one)its a big step ahead.
Not that the FT990 is no good tranceicer, sure it is....buth the Mark-V blow it away.
Very very sensitive RX...audio on receive modes are great.
Good audio transmitting as well with my simple MD-100 microfoon.
I hope to have fun fore many years with this tranceiver.

Best Rig I have Owned!
|
Time owned: 0 to 3 months

I managed to find a MK5 in MINT condition-wich in itself is rare I suppose as many of the MP's have been battered and torture tested during DX-peditions and contests.
The rig does Everything Very well-the noise floor is low, selectivity is great , audio is very nice-(and configureable!.) The PSU is quiet-(Fan noise AND electrically). The VRF and DSP Works, and very well at that!.
Because of the various very good stages of filtering this rig closely emulates the FT-1000d which was a benchmark rig in its' day, now with added DSP-it is even better!.
Some reviews like the EA obviously had a bad unit, or one struck by lightning-because this rig is Quality!. A keeper for sure!.
Hopefully my '5' will lift the average a bit-as this rig deserves a better rating!.
Well done Yaesu! and thank you JA1MP..

Great radio, I must say Dsp is very effective, Add roofing filter and this is only radio you will ever need. I get great reports running low power. Good quality like the old kenwood's. This is a real radio.

Great ! Great! Great!

I bought a second-hand one (Wow! wath a risk!) .Excellent transceiver, 200 watt power is very useful in many case.I,ve also a lot of narrow filters (i'm looking for a 500Hz Collins mechanical filter).I got more than 120 DXCC in no more than 4 months. It needs only a good microphone because the standard one give a very narrow modulation, good in dx and contest but ugly for normal qso with friends.
The other thing is the "menu" for setting the RTX, very difficult to be remembered, so I need always the user manual close to the radio.Satisfied 100% !

I am not much for writing anything let alone reviews. I will not go into the detail of the pluses and minuses of the transceiver; they are well documented.
I will say this. IMO, the MkV has been the BEST HF transceiver that I could afford to own and I have owned quite a number of transceivers in the 30+ years of being an Amateur.
My rig has all the factory standard and optional filters. I have tweaked the radio via the menu system to what I think are the optimal parameters. I have the FTV-1000 6m transverter. I use a Heil GM-4 microphone.
Anyone can be heard, it only takes power. Hearing who is coming back to you is quite another story.
As I tell people who drop by the shack and listen to the radio, it is NOT what you hear but what you DON'T hear. And I think that says it all.
JA1MP would have been very proud of what HIS company achieved with the Mark V.
