Great Mod for AM!

Time owned: 6 to 12 months

Perhaps I got lucky, but I didn't find this
filter difficult to solder at all. Did the
mod on a Sunday morning and the entire
procedure took less than 30 minutes.
This filter is great for those who do
AM BCB DXing (though you're more than
likely using ECSS in SSB) and also
just for those who enjoy the AM nets
on 75 meters, or 160.
FM stations on 10, 6, and 2 meters still
sound fine, with no distortion. I highly
recommend this modification!

Good performance upgrade for the Icom 756 and Icom 746
|

This 455khz IF filter, with a 6khz bandwidth is a worthwhile addition for owners of the Ic-756 who still like to listen and work the AM mode. The stock Ic-756 15khz filter is too wide for HF AM mode use. Installation in the 455khz IF is not for the inexperienced amateur solderer. With 30 years of working in the microelectronics business, I can honestly say installation had it's tense moments. Removal of the 15khz filter should be done with the minimum of heat, and without much effort you can lift a copper trace or two!. This is more the result of the layout by ICOM. Just be very carefull or you will be in for some aggrivation putting the new filter on the board, have a helper assist you, and solder quickly!
The 6khz filter performed great, you will not miss the 15khz filter at all. AM stations can now be easily separated, and the noise is lower. FM stations on 10 meters and 6 meters still sound great.
