nicely built, at a Great price

I have the KG-UV2D model. This is my 1st HT and it seems like a very solid radio. It seems to be really well built, I have have no issues in it's over all construction. My only reason for the 4/5 instead of a 5/5, is the programing, and the menues. I will admit, I am a greenhorn on this issue, only been a ham since Oct, 2011. But, I love this thing! I can hit the repeaters in my area really well, and got on to 1, 30 miles away, in my house. Big 3, look out!

Just received my Wouxum KG-UV3D UHF HT note it is a 3 not the 2 model.
The most complaints I read were people who had problems using the powerwrex free software and USB cable. Make sure the USB plug is in all the way.
My operating system is XP pro. downloading the free software from powerwrex.com took several tries.
When you download the software be sure to select the correct driver and OP sys.
Once I installed the driver then the software I ran into an unusual problem. Normally the driver software will be detected automatically. Mine is configured to use com port 7 yours might be different.
Several times when I was setting up the HT fredquencies and offsets.I had to change the driver from the default port 1 to port 7. This might happen if the HT is not connected to the USB cable and powered on when your computer is booting up.
This is not the best HT if you want to use it for more then two repeaters or simplex frequencies.
It certainly is as advertized and works like the more expensive HT's.
The over all quality is far better then I expected. It tunes the FM 88 to 108 MHz and has good quality sound. It has a bright LED flashlight built in.
Using the rubber duck on 2 meters I can communicate at least 15 miles from my living room.
It seems to be a good addition to my ham shack.
I suggest having lots of patients and knowing your operating system.

Great HT for the money

Outstanding product at a reasonable price considering all the over-priced ham radio rigs on the market. The user's guide is written in "Chinese" English, unfortunately, but the wouxun.us site has an "Eyes Free Manual" (rtf file) that helps to get you started. Simple to use once you get past the user's guide. Once you are familiar with using the HT, then the user's guide becomes really helpful. Basic HT; no frills. Of course! No frills price. The free Wouxun software is OK, but the free KG-UV Commander software is better and easy to use. Get the programming cable. Easier than hand-programming the HT and even easier to modify! I get great signal reports with the KG-UV2D. Hint! Buy a high gain rubber ducky for it such as the Diamond RH951S. I can't seem to wear the battery out. I bought two of them.

Revised Review after changing software
|
Time owned: 3 to 6 months

My plea for help was answered my KC8UNJ's program kguv012b.zip available at http://www.kc8unj.com/kguv.html. So if you are experiencing problems, toss the software provided by Wouxan and try KC8UNJ's program instead.
After using Jims program to write to the radio, my selection of the English language guide (voice) now persists through power cycles. See my October 23 review for details.

A good radio.I have the 2meter/220 version. The reason I gave it a 4 rather than a 5 is you can't lock a channel when scanning. For me this means when travel if I put in a new frequent manually I can't lock out some other channels that might be stoping my radio from scanning.I mean you can lock out a channel but you have to use the software.

Nice radio for the price. I've owned just about every HT Yaesu makes and I actually really like this Wouxun unit. I sold my two other Yaesu HTs (VX-6R and VX-3R) and bought a Wouxun KG-UV2D and Baofeng UV-3R and put several HUNDRED dollars in the bank! Gotta love it! The Wouxun is simple to program with the FREE software, Simple to expand the TX limits with FREE software, works perfectly and I got mine for $110 from Wouxun.us. If you have realistic expectations you will not be disappointed in this radio.

Awesome Radio!

I have been using an HTX-202 since I was first licensed as KC2GYV and stationed in Stuttgart, Germany (DA6GYV reciprocal German call). After quite a few years I decided to upgrade, but didn't want to spend a LOT of money on a new HT, in an efforts to keep out of hot water with the XYL.
After talking with Cory with WouxunUS out of FL, I decided to purchase the KG-UV2D with the programming software. I paid on a Friday, Cory shipped out on a Saturday, and I had in my hands on Tuesday. Besides the outstanding customer service from Cory (Thanks!), I love this new rig!
It is easy to program using the software provided - not at all like using ADMS for my FT-8900R mobile. I had the radio programmed and was testing on the local repeaters well within 10-15 minutes of arrival. Reports received back were full quieting. I also tested it out on the Canadian repeaters just across the Stratis of Juan de Fuca - and it sounded like I was right net door.
The manual was in ChEnglish, but that was ok! I read it twice, and followed some of the menu shortcuts to turn off the voice promt/guide (very helpful, by the way), change the settings for the backlight, among other small minute changes due to personal preference.
While small when compared to the HTX-202 brick, it is packed with just about every feature you can think of, has a good price, especially for those on a budget, and sounds like a radio three or four times its' cost.
My 10 year old son has expressed an interest in learning the hobby - I plan on buying him one of these for Christmas - providing he earns his ticket before then!
If Wouxun comes out with a mobile like I hear they have been working on, I will be one of the first in line to purchase that rig as well.

Double-Awesome

Two main gripes. First the software is cheesy. No-go on my XP laptop, some Vista works as do some W7- there's no rhyme or reason to this. Someone near you will have working software, just use theirs and keep your file in case you need it again Second gripe is the non-Ham style manual programming but it's not hard to learn. Another downside is that 12V operation requires you get both the 12V battery adapter and the ciggie cable. The stock antenna gives a better signal out than what the big guys give you- if you simply must, get the adaptor and run an aftermarket SMA but you really don't need it.
You can program FM Broadcast to memory, go to "radio" mode; enter frequency; and save as you do with Ham freqs. It will default to 76MHz but your station is now one button push away. Great at work where I don't miss Ham calls anymore. Now brace yourself- I have not been gentle with this one; in fact I know of nobody who abuses a HT like I have this one. It's been dropped and had lumber fall on it and the worst that happens is the battery pops off. Pop it on and you're like new except the battery fit will be looser. No sweat if you kill it as cheap as it is, but this is one tough rig you will have to try very hard to kill it. The reversed SMA is one heck of a lot stronger than the standard config; seems the big guys blew it there. RX and TX audio is super clear and loud, batteries last nigh on forever. The speaker/Mic is great. Other upsides are cheap batteries/accessories and very wide range after unlocking (yes you can unlock these).
I've had Icom, Alinco, and Yaesu HT's and they can't hold a candle to this one except in the extra-stuff department. My FT530 does darn near everything except DCS but it just collects dust now. My Wouxun is my constant companion and I'm getting the 220 version soon. You won't see me buying another HT from the big guys again; I don't need their 'extra stuff' on a HT. I'm that impressed- get one yourself and you'll feel the same way, even of you take good care of it!

Top notch sounding receiver with loud audio. Battery life is excellent. I have the 2/220 version and it works on 220 just as well as it does on 2 meters. As my friend N2SWD would say, "such a deal"...

It does everithing for the money you spent.

Hi! Ciao! I bought it for the low price and have a VHF / UHF rig to be used during exercises with the Civil Defense of my city, so if it falls to the ground I do not cry thinking of the money spent if it were a Yaesu, Icom or Kenwood rig . Not a bad radio, I also bought all the accessories, is less sensitive than others in receiving but otherwise works well. It does everithing for the money you spent and perhaps much more.
