LCD Replacement kit/repair service

My Icom IC-756 eventually succumbed to the dreaded blue lines, and finally the display was virtually unreadable. Early failures of this LCD were repaired/replaced by Icom under their normal warranty, and, even after the expiration of the warranty Icom recognised this was a fault of the original display manufactuer and had a very generous repair policy. Mine however was long out of warranty, and Icom were unable to assist. By accident I came across this facility who were offering either a kit of parts for those capable of dealing with this replacement and modification, or, for a small extra cost, they would perform the modification and replacement for you. All you had to do was remove the front panel, for which they gave well illustrated instructions, send the front panel to them. They would modify it, replace the LCD, test it on an IC-756, and then return it. They provide on their website complete illustrated modification instructions. Be aware however, that some very delicate soldering is required, for which you will need a large desk magnifier as well as a tiny soldering iron. In addition. you will need to remove a couple of surface-mount components. As the replacement display is not electrically identical, the Icom's noisy high-voltage flourescent tube backlight supply will need to be disabled, and the new LED illumination connected. This requires cutting a couple of tracks and adding two wires. I decided to let the company perform this for me, especially as they would then test it as well, and the additional cost was minimal. It only takes a few minutes to remove the front panel, I packed mine in plenty of bubble-wrap and a sturdy box and sent it off. It took just over two weeks altogether, mostly postal transit times. The replacement display is not quite as high contrast as the original, but provided the incident light levels are reasonably low, it is perfectly readable. Bearing in mind the original was unreadable, this is bound to be an improvement. In summary, if you have one of these excellent rigs with a failed display, then for less than 300 Euros you can restore it to service. I am well pleased with mine.
