Finally! A contesting program for the Mac.  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
There is not much available in the way of contesting software for the Mac. Some of the logging programs have a contesting mode, but they are very basic and don’t provide such niceties as scoring, rates, or time on/off calculations.

So I was very happy to find RUMped, a free contesting program written by Thomas Lindner, DL2RUM. Originally developed as a program for DXpeditions, it has been modified to become a full-featured contesting program that runs natively on the Mac.

Although I am a hard-core Mac user, I have always used Windows programs for contesting. I primarily use Writelog, but have worked with both CT and N1MM as well. I was anxious to see how RUMped would compare to these Windows workhorses. So I took the leap and used RUMped during the recent CQ WW CW contest.

Here is the short version: RUMped is a fully functional, stable, and easy-to-use contesting program that will meet the needs of any contester who prefers to use a Mac. However, it is missing a few of the bells and whistles that you might be used to seeing in similar programs in the Windows environment. More on that later . . .

The user interface is a thing of beauty. It is well organized and it provides all the information you need in a single window. In addition, you can pull up windows for a DX Cluster, a band map, rates, multipliers, and other information that you might want off to the side of the main window. Two optional windows that I found to be extremely useful were the Grayline Map and the Band Map. The latter provides color coding of DX spots depending on whether they are doubles, needed mults, or needed calls.

The other thing that impressed me about RUMped was the robust interfacing with my hardware. The software never once lost contact with my Elecraft K3, which is more than I can say about the Windows programs I’ve used.

Keying CW directly from a software program using CAT commands or the RTS line is often problematic, and that is the case with RUMped as well. Luckily, the software supports Winkey (K1EL) keyers and it worked with my WKUSB model with no problems. Macros can be sent via F-key, by mouse-clicks, or programmatically when you enter a call sign and press the space bar.

Now – while the program works flawlessly and has plenty of useful features, there are three things that I found missing that separate RUMped from the big guys such as Writelog, Win-Test, and N1MM. While none of these are show-stoppers, they would make a good program a great program. Here they are in order of importance:

HANDLING OF DOUBLES: I almost never get a double in my logs, and I had two during this contest. When running, you typically enter a callsign and hit enter (or in the case of RUMped the space bar) to start sending the exchange. With other contesting programs, the software will recognize if the call is a double, and send a different exchange (“SRI QSO B4”) and not log the contact. RUMped does recognize the double, but not until you hit the space bar. By then the regular exchange is being sent and you are in the other station’s log. What the software needs is the ability to change the exchange that is sent based on whether the call is already in the log.

SEARCH AND POUNCE MEMORIES: When operating S&P. you often find a mult that is behind a huge pileup. It is nice to be able to park the call and its frequency in a memory location to be accessed again later. This functionality does not exist in RUMPed.

SENDING SPOTS: This is another nice feature when operating S&P. You can enter spots in the DX terminal window, but it requires typing all the data by hand. This is time consuming and prone to error. What RUMped needs is a keyboard shortcut that will take the last logged entry and automatically send it to the DX cluster.
