Datong quality 144/28Mhz converter  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
This is the first Datong product that joined my shack. Am totally impressed with the quality of this product. I bought just the PCB module. All components were installed so I had just to put it inside an enclosure. NO ADJUSTMENT TO THE COILS WERE NEEDED. IT WAS FACTORY CALIBRATED! Only the trimmer capacitor next to the output may be peaked for max gain as described in the instructions sheet. However even the trimmer was very close to max gain, just a difference of a couple of db. Gain controls at input and output are for optimunm gain signal handling capability of your reveiving sistem. I left them for maximum gain. For best overload capability it may set to minimum gain either at the input or the output or both.
A converter like this may be used in a variety of ways. As a converter, as an intermediate frequency of an UHF converter or so or attached to the antenna to exploit the gain capability of the converter and use a cheap cable between the conveter and the HF receiver (losses become quite negligeble at 28Mhz after 18db gain)! If used at the antenna no preamplifier or filter is needed. The Datong has all and even you can choose the optimum gain for your receiving system.
Compared to the Hamtronics CA144-28 RX downconverter I prefer the Datong. It has more gain but what was important is that the Datong was assembled and factory calibrated. Works first time, no hassle at all. Just fun!
