Not an Astron!  Time owned: 3 to 6 months
The power supply manufacturing business is very competitive! Manufactures can 'nickel-dime' the components which is the power supply. The pyramid is an example of this. First, the capacitor filter board has only five (5) 6800uf @ 25vdc capacitors. The 120 cycle ripple current far exceeds the capacitor ratings at 30 amps load @ 50% duty cycle. The 25 volt rating is less than the 35 volt I prefer. The dual bridge rectifiers used half-wave most likely are up to the task. The four pass transistors (2N3772) are a good choice, but I prefer to have six for 30 amps. The pass transistor heat sinks are very small. Per Motorola, for every 10 degree C reduction in junction temperature, the life of the transistor doubles. As mentioned above, yes I loss a filter cap and the arc trashed the electronic circuitry! I would rate this power supply closer to 20 amps ICAS. I would also prefer an Astron RS-35A. The Astron makes use of better rated parts. One advantage this Pyramid #PS 35G has over the Astron is the compact size. However, anything smaller such as heatsink capacity or number of pass transistors per amps use is less of a product.
