Digital display off 1 Khz. Excessive noise on AM  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
Obtained my sample recently and directly from Kaito USA.

Digital display is off 1 Khz (by design).
This seems to be a design flaw or factory issue and is reported by other owners on the PL-660
Yahoo support group. This issue can quickly be confirmed on your sample by going to Medium wave, narrow bandwidth, WEAK DAYTIME signal, signal peaks 1 Khz off.

Variable BFO (beat freq osc) scared me away as I havent seen this feature on a radio in many decades. Variable BFO and a real fine tune are not the same. PL660 Bfo Injection is a bit rough at times. Medium wave AM sensitivity is decent as it it pulls in very weak AM signals as well as the better higher cost radios do, but as signal strength improves the audio hiss does not drop down nearly as fast as it should, meaning that many medium strength signals have some hiss behind them that is not there on better medium wave performers. Good sync and it also does a much better job handling a good external antenna than other low end portables. Shortwave, FM, SSB all very good to excellent.
Disappointing overall performance of the AM (MW) section.

Panasonic RF-2200 - Still the medium wave (portable) reference against which all others can be compared. Panasonic RF-B65 also an excellent "handheld" choice. See the reviews for both Panasonics here on eHam reviews.

Very nice , better than PL-600  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
Hi,
still have got Sony ICF-7600GR, Techsun PL-600 and Sangean ATS-909X.
Ergonomy on the PL-660 is much better than on the PL-600, the keyboard has become
more functional. The case has been changed, the look is now top notch.
Selecting SW bands keeps the SSB position in now, LSB or USB can
be selected ..
RX is very sensitive on all bands, including the airband, which is a usefull addition :
Local airfield, Vollmet, etc.
Longwave is OK. LW could be received within a tunnel of 2 kilometers on a electric
train producing heavy QRN… : no QRM on the set, clear LW reception , very rare
on LW….indeed… Also on MW….. FM is also very nice…mono and stereo.

Selectivity on SSB is OK, 80m SSB could be received on the train, the telescopic
antenna being only out by 30 centimeters… 160 m stations on SSB were clearly received
at night , on the first floor of my house, with the telescoping whip.
The addition of a synchron detector is a big plus.
A very interesting set for the price, I am more than happy.

Outstanding!  Time owned: 3 to 6 months
What a great little radio! Works well on all
bands and all modes. I have many small portables
and this one outshines them all! I listen mainly
to SSB and CW signals on the ham bands and the
sensitivity and selectivity are more than adequate
on the whip. I also enjoy chasing NDB's on LW and
new broadcast catches on MW and this receiver ranks
right up there with the best; especially when hooked
up to my Wellbrook ALA 100M loop. Air band is also
very sensitive and I can pick up O'Hare and Midway
towers off the whip and they're both about 8 miles
away in opposite directions. I'm not into FM but
from what I hear that, too, is very good. As for
the sync, it holds like a rock. Try as I might,
I cannot fault this little gem! I'm sure I will
purchase another just for standby purposes. Oh,
one more thing, Tecsun provided a triggering
voltage at the external antenna input so, if you
have a Sony AN-LP1 it will be activated
when in the SW bands. I guess maybe Tecsun has
a similar antenna in the works?

DX-440 in small package.  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
my first impression on PL-660 remind of me, my old Radio Shack DX-440 receiver I used to have. The sound, tuning, display remind are similar to DX-440, but just in compact package. I use PL-660 with external antenna, it works well. I also like the future that it can charge AA NIMH battery by selecting charge mode [ ON ] , also I changed FM mode to cover 76 to 108 MHz continuously. and turned ON [ LW ] / long wave. long wave can be turned on by pressing AM button while in AM broadcast band [ MW ] mode. only thing I can tell the difference from normal HF HAM receiver is lack of Noise Blanker.

Excellent receiver for the money  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I purchased the Tecsun PL-660 from Amazon.com and have been absolutely amazed at the performance of this particular receiver. I have a large collection of HF portable radio receivers and without a doubt I would have to class this one as the best in it's price range, even surpassing the Tecsun PL-600 which is also a very fine receiver. The AM and FM bands both have superb sensitivity and selectivity, but what impressed me the most about the PL-660 was is shortwave performance, particularly using the SSB mode. I enjoy monitoring the aeronautical HF shortwave bands and I found this receiver more than up to the task. I ran a simultaneous test of this receiver using only the internal HF whip antenna against my Grundig Satelit 750 that was connected to an HF dipole. I tuned both radios to 11.336 Mhz and could hear Gander Radio in Newfoundland loud and clear on both receivers at the same audio level and signal strength. That sold me.

Another thing that sold me on the PL-660 is the VHF Air band reception. I own several portables with this capability and THIS radio outshines them all.

FM reception is also very good as I have been
able to receive far away stations on the PL-660 that I could not receive on other radios of it's class without the use of an external FM antenna.

The LW band is not used much in the US except for monitoring the various beacons that occupy that band here in the US. but the beacons could be heard very well indeed on this small portable.

All in all for the money you can't beat this radio and I highly recommend it for those who are interested in purchasing a good all around receiver.
