Great Radio for the price  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
Firm Ver:297

Problems Intermod from other noise sources-switching power supply computer generated noise ETC.

The Fix: turn on CTCS decode- will work if the repeater you are working is Transmiting a PL tone
or just move away from the noise source.
Sometimes just moving away 3 or 4ft from a noise source will work.

Tested power output with a HP8924 service monitor
Fully charged battery
VHF Low power 1 1/4 watts High 4 watts
UHF Low power 1 watts High 3 1/2watts

If buying a used UV5R on Ebay or other website
Beware of old firmware versions with the Bugs in them.
I read many reveiws with hams using the UV5R with the older firmware version with receiver audio problems, volume control turn down all the way and still hearing receive audio & Low mic audio ouput reports.

My Radio has the newer firmware:297
with just intermod problems so far.

How to find out what the firmware is in the Radio

Just hold down the DTMF#3 and turn on the Radio, it will display the firmware version in the Radio for about 1 sec in the display.

I rating the radio a 5 because of the low price and overall performance.

If buying from China it takes about 2 week to arrive to your QTH.
