Great radio IF matched with DMU-2000
Time owned: more than 12 months
DSP on this radio is great. The receiver pulls out weak signals well. My rule of thumb was if I could hear them I could work them. With only 100 watts and 80-10 carolina windom.
CW memory keyer was great to use.
HRD works great with this radio too.
I purchased the DMU-2000 and the SP-2000 to go with this radio in addition to the voice memory.
I purchased some acoustical speaker filling and stuffed the speaker with it and BOY WHAT A DIFFERENCE it made with the external yaesu speaker.
Audio contour control allowed me to enhance the rx audio to sound EXCELLENT.
I found the roofing filters made no difference for me.
You have to look hard to find info on how to zero beat but it is out there if you look hard enough. I think I adjusted mine to a value of -20 for the offset for zero beat of wwv USB and LSB.
Without the DMU-2000 I would not buy this radio again.
TX Audio is second to none with the right mic and using DMU-2000 to save the audio configs with various parametric eq settings. THE DMU-2000 has a compac flash memory card installed.
I will say again....without the DMU-2000 I would not buy this radio. The DMU-2000 makes the radio complete. Without it you are forced to look through a bunch of menus whereas with the DMU-2000 everything is detailed and visually easy to see. The radios display of the menus is very abbreviated and not easy to understand if you are trying to recall a set of parametric eq settings profile to load or when you are going through the menus to do anything. YOU HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE MENUS TO EVEN CHANGE POWER LEVELS. You get one button on the front panel that you can assign a menu item to for quick access so I chose the rf power output for that button.
Just look at a FT-2000 and then look at the FT-950 if you want to see what items ARE NOT on the front panel of the FT-950 as they are hidden in the menu system...this can make it kind of aggravating to do adjust a basic item such as RF output, etc.
The noise blanker I found to be useless for the interference I endure at my qth. I even uploaded a sound file to the FT-950 yahoo group if you want to hear what this radio WILL NOT get rid of. NO MATTER WHAT LEVEL I ADJUSTED THE NB to I never was able to get rid of it and it was annoying especially on 10 meters. I spent months trying to get the nb to get rid of my problem but simply put this radio's nb is useless for me. That is my experience and I have read where others say it works fine for them but like I said I uploaded a audio file to the yahoo group recorded by HRD.
So in closing my thoughts are this:
I would not buy this radio without a DMU-2000. The price of this radio has gone up several hundred dollars since I first bought mine.
Product is in production.
