Tough and reliable.			Time owned: 0 to 3 months
The Yaesu VX-170 is quite possibly one of the toughest consumer grade HTs currently on the market. This is the type of transceiver you would take along on a search and rescue type mission. It also could double as a defensive weapon if you swung it at an attacker by the antenna. Receive and transmit audio is great when compared to the last two HTs I owned, (Kenwood TH-315a, Yaesu VX-2.) Not that the last two radios have poor audio, there just seems to be some addition refinements made over the years. Battery life is great and programming is a snap. The learning curve for most people should be in the five minute range. Keep in mind, this is not a radio that you are going to slip into your front shirt pocket and walk around a ham fest. To put things in perspective, the VX-170 is like a Colt 1911 .45, where as the VX-2 is like a .25 auto. They both get the job done; they just each have there own time and place.
