Muffled audio
|
Time owned: 3 to 6 months
|
This microphone was supplied with my FT-897D.
Unfortunately the frequency response is not suited to my voice, which seems to have a peak at around 800Hz.
Position 2 gives the best results, with the low frequencies being reduced; however the speech quality still sounds muffled.
I did some investigation with ‘Spectrum lab’ running on my PC. I believe there is a fundamental problem with the design of the slotted vents on the face of the microphone. This seems to cause standing wave patterns, which put ‘notches’ in the frequency response. You may notice this if you compare the variation in speech quality when you speak directly into the front of the microphone, from the sides, or from above or below. Each position gives a different tonal quality.
I tried a few different microphone inserts before realising this problem. So I now use a different hand mic or boom headset with electret capsules, which give me much better audio reports.
