A Pleasant Surprise  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I have been an HF-CW only operator for nearly 50 years and after attending a recent hamfest here in the Seattle area, decided to buy my first VHF/UHF handheld. Being an ICOM enthusiast and wanting the latest technology, I purchased an IC-92AD in late March.

What a pleasant surprise! The little HT is beautifully made, rugged and seemed so "tiny" as compared to my many HF rigs. After studying the manual a bit, I finally got the rig running, programming done via the optional software, and now run it almost exclusively mobile. Just the novelty of the VHF/UHF experience is very enjoyable, and have met many new friends via the numerous Western Washington repeaters.

Besides ease of operation (in typical ICOM fashion), the rig is loaded with features: Next I'll try Digital Voice, D-STAR and GPS (concepts I had no idea even existed in HT radios until researching the ICOM website - again, I'm the "old time" CW operator - no keyers or mikes in THIS shack!). Yes, the '92 is expensive and the options are a bit pricey (I have them all), but for the beginning VHF/UHF operator, the quality, excellent audio reports, versatility and learning these new modes/technolgies offered by the rig can't be beat.

In a word, if you're looking for the best - get an IC-92A. I give it a solid 5 and hope to write an updated report in a few months.

Best 73's and CU on 160M-10M HF-CW and VHF/UHF.
