I have had quite a few radios since I got my novice license in 1963. Do to tight money I do a LOT of trading in a effort to try different radios. When it comes to comparing radios it is really all subjective. If you own a $4,000 to $15,000 radio and use that as a reference then for comparison you will probably find this radio to be junk or for that matter 90% of the radios on the market. It is not! I had a lot of fun field day just making contacts. I compared the 718 against my 756, 706 and 703 (A-B switching my 4BTV antenna). Found the receiver to be almost as good at hearing as my 756 and with the DSP kicked in did a great job of peeling one signal from another. The radio did a great job matching my 706 and 703 both with the same DSP in pulling out the signals and making them readable. So in short this is not a junk radio and to call it just and entry level radio is cutting it short. It is small, but not too small. Easy to use. Great sound. I have bad hearing and this radio has very clean audio. The DSP works like a charm. And basically I can hear a lot and work them all. What more could you ask for. I would recommend the radio to any newbe or old timer, as a main rig, back up, for encomm or portable operation in a heartbeat. This turned out to be one great trade.
