Rigs share a lot in common with cars of today and years past. I think it is less about the particular manufacturer, and more about what strikes your fancy during the test drive.
From SDR's to boat-anchors, there is something out there that fills the bill for almost everybody.Remember, its the thrill of the hunt, not the size of the gun that determines most folks outcomes.
I have used 15 or 20 different radios, transmitters, transievers over the years, and found something to like about almost all of them..a certain feature or the front arrangement, color, knobs, sensitivity,selectivity..and more.
So buy a rig like a good pair of shoes, get one that fits YOU..not one size fits all.

I have not had any thing other than MFJ,Yeasu,Diamond. Yeasus radios have been good. But I have not tryed any other companys. Yeasu just had what we wanted, so not to make the kenwood and icom people feel bad I have yeasus.

I have almost always bought Icom they just seem better
made. I have had a Ranger 6m and an Alinco also and they
were good too. I just prefer Icom.
I agree about MFJ. A lot of people complain about them. All
makers have a bad item now and then. But overall I have had
good luck with them.

My Opinion: Based on 28 years of operating. MFJ gets blasted all the time which is sad and unwarranted, most of the negativity is by people who are snobs and couldn’t put together two wires. I elect MFJ for filling a giant void for the average ham who is not rich but typical. How many can spent 10 G's for a radio or a grand for an antenna tuner? Why do you need a tuner that cost a grand or a radio that cost as much as a car, and forget the amplifiers. MFJ meets the average guys needs where the others are out of touch.
I used just about all manufactures including the ones now defunct. My favorites are and not in any particular order. Yaesu, Icom and Elecraft. Yaesu being my preferred with their easy to up date radios that won't bankrupt you. Icom has great radios that are over priced and don't hold their value. Ten Tec is my last choice and in fact the people at Ten Tec are arrogant and the TT followers need counseling.

i have only bought icom gear and i am allways satisfied. i have never really used yaesu and other companies so i cant say it is the best yet.

I've had Yaesu, Ten Tec, Kenwood and Icom in that order. I would buy Yaesu, Kenwood and Icom again, not Ten Tec. The Yaesu, Kenwood and Icom all quality equipment. The Ten Tec was cheaply built and couldn't hear a freight train coming through the front door. I would love to buy an American made product but not at the sacrifice of quality.

Collins, Drake, Heath, Johnson, Hallicrafters, Hammurlund, Ameco. Why? Because 50, 60,70 years later, they are still on the air. Let's see how you uproc rig does 60 years from now, if this game is still in town.

When I buy a radio the main thing I will look is performance and not beautiness, therefor for my the best radio manufacturers today acording my rules will be as follow:
1-Elecraft with either the K3 or K2
2-Tentec with the Orion II
3-Flex 5000
4-Icom with their 7800,7700 and 7600
No more on my list.

FlexRadio, Elecraft, Ten-Tec in that order on the HF side..
VHF/UHF would be hard to say, I think of the three Japanese owned/Chinese made brands are all just fine.
