Speak Out: Famous Contacts
A contributor states, "I was just reading through some of the websites that list some of the famous hams. It got me thinking... I wonder if anyone has a story about talking with one of these famous hams. Have you ever had a contact with a famous ham? If so please share the details of the QSO."

I've had the pleasure of an "eyeball" QSO with Gordon West. Still have his autographed QSL card. Also spoke with Joe Walsh via e-mail. Very cool!

I had a QSO with Bob Ferrero owner of HRO when he was in Africa 10 or so years ago. Also had frequent QSO's
with my great-Uncle Ron W6ZF; he was personally acquainted with people like Lee DeForest who made tubes for
him. Never spoke with Bob Heil on the air but have spoken to him in person several times. Very colorful.
Got him to autograph my PR-40.

Many years ago I had just gotten my Tech license and the
Science Center in St Louis had installed a station to do vhf
com using sats. We were playing and all of sudden we
contacted MIR. Fortunately for me, there was a Soviet Space
display that was visiting and I had been talking to the
Russian Rocket Scientists. (I use to know enough russian to
get by or my face slapped.) I quickly called one of them
over, We had a good 15 min conversation with the
Cosmonauts.

Can't really say that this guy was famous, but, I had a nice 5-10 minute QSO with the former deputy prime minister of Bulgaria in the early or mid 90's. I had only had my general ticket for a few weeks and didn't have any QSL cards yet, but if I look in my old paper log I probably still have all of the information. He was the current professor of economics at the University of Belize, thats where he was when we chatted. Seemed like a really nice guy, wish I woulda had my cards, OH Well stuff happens.

My most memorable contact was with JY1, His Majesty King Hussein of Jordan, many years ago. I was stunned when I made the contact, and so proud when I got his QSL card. His Majesty was an avid DX'er and loved making contacts. Truly memorable.

Father Moran 9N1MM on phone as a new ham, Tom Christian VR6TC also on phone, and Louis Varney CX5RV on CW when he was in his wife's homeland of Uruguay. He answered my CQ on 20meters, and it took a minute or two to realize it was G5RV I was chatting with. I was thrilled, his fist was excellent and mine started to get shakey.

I've worked John, ON4UN (of Low band DXing fame) a couple of times on 20 SSB and once was a great ragchew about microphones. He's really into condenser mics and I was using one too. What a great guy.
I also worked Ronnie Milsap back ing the early 1980's on 2M FM when ilived in Orlando, FL. He was in his bus traveling.

Famous Ham..it was JY1 on 20 meters. He was
airborne in his aircraft. Very short qso.
But we did exchange qsl cards. I still have it
in a frame in my shack.
