Speak Out: Smallest Shack?
A contributor asks, "Lots of people like to boast about how large their ham shacks are but how about a friendly competition to find out who operates from the smallest shack? (HT only excluded.) My shack is 69" x 61" (that's roughly 1.75 m x 1.50 m), about as large as a coat closet, and that includes all my radio equipment (Icom IC-736, Icom IC- 2200H, Icom R-75, 13.8 VDC power supply, computer, monitor, miscellaneous test and monitoring equipment) and my project development workbench. Anyone want to challenge that?"

if you don't use it - put it in the closet:

I have an old Broadcast station
studio desk that I got from station that wanted to get rid of its furniture 80 inches wide by 36 inches deep and 2 tiers.
Can spread out and all the equipment fits with room to spare

I operate from a 17x40 inch desk in the corner of the family
room. It contains an HF radio and power supply, antenna
tuner, key, and a 2 meter HT. It's cozy, but it works for me.

Gee now that I think about it years ago I had a closet shack. It was cool because I had the entire closet to work as far as bringing in all of my cables, nothing to disturb them. What I liked too was when I wasn't operating, the door was closed and the shack disappeared from my childrens' curious fingers.

There are two kinds of shacks - good ones and bad ones.
Good ones are safe and efficient and size does not matter. They hold only what the ham really wants and really needs and nothing more or less.
Bad shacks are not safe or efficient. They are filled with things that the ham really does not need and if he thought about it honestly really does not want.
All shacks need to be cleaned often, and also cleaned out often.
A good slogan: If you own it, use it. If you don't use it, get rid of it.

The first thing I check when I log in are the shack pictures. I find it fascinating to see what hams have done with their hobby. I've even been know to log in more than once to see more shack pictures. There's probably a book in there some place. Gordon West?

Who cares about how much or how little room one has for their shack? As long as fun can be had then what's the deal? My shack is a 10 foot x 8 foot Lowes shed that I insulated, painted to match our house color, added an AC/heater wall unit, installed lights and enough plugs from the breaker box to power the radio power supply, ac, light and a linear if I so choose. Plenty small enough or big enough...depends on your point of view.

My shack is on a home made desk and measures 36"L X 43"H X 20"W. Its located in my bedroom and it holds all of my equipment: Yaesu FT-990, Ameritron 811H amp, Drake MN2000 tuner, a Grove SP200 speaker and a Yaesu FT-897d that is used primarily for portable or field operation. KB2SHS is right - it doesn't take much to enjoy amateur radio. You can check it out on QRZ.com

My radio station is on top of a typewriter table on wheels in the living room at the end of the couch. Consists of a Kenwood TS-2000, a sounds sweet speaker and a small lamp. finis
