Maybe Next Year
Missed it this year - but have been to about 10 of them in
the last 20 years and my only regret is that I didn't go
EVERY year.

I've drank the kool-aid and know this Dayton Hamvention
is a spiritual gestalt event. I got a call from Steve, N1SG
who reported the excitement at the Elecraft booth and the
new KX3 ultra-light transceiver.

I'd be at the Flex dinner tonight taking in the Italian buffet
and catching the latest news from the SDR developers.
The flea market, the Begali keys, Ten Tec, Alpha, Step-IR,
Icom, HRO, the insane layout of Hara, the spontaneous eye
ball QSOs - all Nirvana!

Hope everyone that attended enjoyed it totally and the
untraditional bonus of the superb WX! Look for you next
year.

I will be there
Been a Ham for a week. I will be joining a local club and taking a bus from Cleveland to Dayton with my 12 year old son. Looking forward to the event. My first and probably no where near my last.

Posted by NA8Y on May 19, 2011

I'd love to go but I'm still looking for a job after 2 1/2 years so it's just not in the cards.

Posted by K7CB on May 19, 2011

Dayton
Not in the cards this year, maybe next year. At least we have www.HamCom.org to look forward to next month.

Dayton show.
I enjoy being around so many like minded
people. I also like the people watching as to
what kind of characters the hobby attracts !!
My favorite site is the guy with all the
hardware sold by the pound. I normally have to
hit him last as I get waited down with all
manner of very hard to find fasteners. What to
wear? Shorts and t-shirt or an arctic parka HI

Dayton Going or not
Wish I was, going to take my wife and we are heading north to Pa. for a week. See some kin, maybe a few of my friends who are left yet back home. So, what I would have spent going to Dayton, is going for a much needed break for my wife and I. Will most likely go up next year though. I wish each and everyone going great weather, fantastic deals, and good company.

Skipping Dayton
I've been wanting to go since I was first licensed in 1994 but when I calculate the cost of air fare, hotel, rental car, food, etc., it'll cost over $4,000 coming from Honolulu, Hawaii. Maybe one day when I win the lottery, oops, we don't even have that.

Posted by KH6DC on May 17, 2011

Why?
Sorry I don't need to fight crowds or pay too much.

Speaking of TSA Texas passed a "NO GROPING" bill at Texas airports.

Pilgrimage
Can't wait. The pilgrimage is so worthwhile for me. I get to see some old friends, and I mean that in the truest sense as we are all getting so much older than our first trips to "Ham Mecca" over thirty years ago. I've retired to Sunny Florida and this gives me the opportunity to see some dirty old cops/brothers I share war stories with each year. Same stories provided with new "condiments" added for flavor, hi. Agn, CAN'T WAIT!! Note: I can't take the money with me and this could be one of those bucket-list events...

Posted by N3OS on May 14, 2011

Too far - too much hassle...
I'll go to Pacificon again this year, but the TSA/airport drama is just too much to deal with to travel all the way to Dayton, or anywhere else by air, unless absolutely necessary.

Dayton Hamfest
Wish I were closer or had more money to get there! HIHI. When I lived in Ohio I went for 17 straight years and I have missed over 20 of them since. I do miss Dayton Hamfest. I make Orlando's Hamcation, but not the same. It use to occur around my birthday and always gave me an excuse to get a new something or other there, usually a rig.

Hamvention 2011
Absolutely going to Dayton! Can't wait!
I don't buy a lot of stuff. But I do go with a shopping list. Got some ink carridges for my printer last year, and the savings on the ink cartridges almost paid for my fuel costs.
I'm definitely looking for that guy again this year!

Mainly I go down there and hang out with friends both old and new. Some of those folks I only get to see once or twice a year. A lot of socializing and shooting the bull goes on! It's kind of a mini-vacation for me.

It still amazes me to sit in the lunchroom and just see all the non-US callsigns on the badges as people walk by. You could almost work DXCC in the lunchroom without a radio.

If the expense of the trip bothers you, there are ways to cut the costs. Carpooling and sharing a hotel room are two ways. I'm sure there are others.

Ham Bums

Living in Florida makes a trip to Dayton too far for me. That was a differeant story when I lived in Michigan. With all the local swaps in Florida I can see and smell all the hams that need a shave and a shower just the same.

Whats the matter with you guys...HI...

Gas should be the least of your concerns......
When you consider lodging, food and drink, admission and fleamarket spaces, and the big equipment want list you bring to Dayton, gas is down in the noise, especially if you go with a group of friends.

SWOT
Pro: I'd love to go again, and I'm glad so many will be there (even if maybe fewer than past years).

Con: Fixed income; high travel costs; can't afford (or justify) the one rig I'd like to buy; got a three-year backlog of boatanchor restorations and antenna projects; junk box is already way too full.

Ergo: Not this year, probably not next year either. Have fun, OM's & YL's ...

Rather go to Maui

Rather make a fun trip to Maui but then that's only a short flight or longer marine trip from Honolulu ;)

However if I lived within a reasonable distance from Dayton I might consider it.

Have Fun !

Circumstances and reality...
I would love to go, really. But given my circumstances (taking care of 2 autistic family members whom I love very much), I simply can't. I am drained of energy, time, and bank account! I'll have to watch the 'YouTube' videos instead. At least I made it there once (2003) since being licensed in 1977.

Posted by W8KQE on May 12, 2011

No Thanks!
I've been a ham for almost 25 years and SWL before that. Used to subscribe to 73 Magazine back in the day.

I've always read, first in 73, now in CQ and QST about the Dayton hamfest.

But...

I just don't see the attraction. Seriously, there is a distinct difference between a "swapmeet" and a "hamfest". Swapmeets are where people get together and try to out bargain one another. Some folks really get into this. Not me.

Hamfests are where hams get together to go to symposiums and learn about new stuff and also where the vendors show us the latest and greatest equipment. This, for me, is the better deal.

Some overlap between the two, certainly. Unfortunately for us here in the upper left USA, no really good hamfests exist. There haven't been any for quite a while either. Diminished attendance and lower numbers of hams have doomed local hamfests to just being swapmeets.

... And personally, I find it kind of hard to just go to a swapmeet. This is a part of the overall hobby that I have never really understood. If I need something, I usually buy new or do without. The last thing I need is someone else's castoff junk.I've got enough of that already1

Not the time to go.
I am not alone in seeing the need to hang on to every dollar, and make every dollar work for me. What used to be fixed incomes for the retired are now rapidly shrinking imcomes as premiums go up, costs go up, taxes go up. This is the time to tighten the belt and stretch the dollar.

Posted by AI2IA on May 10, 2011

Dayton
Not this year. A long drive (lots of gas) plus motel adds up $. I seldom buy much, but I like to look. I think the ticket price is reasonable, all things considered. I cannot blame the Hamvention crew for the total cost of attending.

Perhaps a more compact arrangement of the outdoor space would help -- instead of having some vendors go to their "traditional" spots. Hopefully gas will be down a little next year.

Bill - W2WO

Posted by W2WO on May 10, 2011

Unavoidable
I live close so it is just impossible to say no, even when thinking of the crowds, the lines for dirty portolets, sore feet, and the downsides. Wish they would cut prices enough to fill the fleamarket with hams again. No rows of empty spots. That is 0$ for DARA versus accepting a little less? Have been going since 74. Glad to leave and then miss it, right away. I will be there in new walking shoes, or old ones and limping. It does get harder as you get older, to take it in! I always return but alot of people swear never again! Bizarre place for people watching, too!

Posted by W8AAZ on May 10, 2011

What recovery?
Gas prices are high, economy is very poor. Plus....Ohio really kills a lot of vendor business with their quest for sales tax.

Posted by WA8MEA on May 10, 2011

Economy continues to be very very bad for me. Maybe next year.

Posted by KM9R on May 10, 2011

Try Overseas?
For those who have been to Dayton multiple times, why not try something new? That is, one of the big overseas ham events. I'm talking about HAM RADIO 2011 in Germany in June or HAM FAIR 2011 in Japan in August. No need to say which of these large ham events is better; they are all quite different. Break your piggy bank and try them out. We may all be getting better, but we're also getting older and time ends for everybody eventually.

Dayton Hamvention
I have been many times in the past. I always enjoy the big show if it all. This year I have three grandchildren graduating; two from high school and one from college. I must travel to one grandsons graduation the week end of the Hamvention. So will miss this year. You all have fun and hope it stays sunny and dry for you.

It's like Mecca...
But with a bunch of smelly old guys (me included). Especially if it rains..

I've not been there since 2004. I've been licensed just over 25 years now and it's the 60th Dayton. Who needs any more excuse to go? It's like Zen and Zen! The stars are aligned -- I must go.. I must!

It's an experience that all hams need to do a few times.

The 1000 mile round trip I'm not looking forward to.. I'm driving this time.

Like many.. don't have a lot of money to spend. Blew my ham budget this year locally...but there still is plenty to do.. Forums for the poor like me...

I used to do Dayton for almost nothing when I was in college. Literally slept in the car! Too old for that now, tho. You can do it for a reasonable price. The $25 admission is worth it just for the spectacle!

These days, you can see what you want to at a local dealer soon enough. Some dealers have the newer stuff already! Why bother traveling so far just to see what you can see locally?

Yes going again
I have been many times, its it getting smaller? Yes but thats ok because I'm getting slower! I can't see all the flea market and all of the inside before its time to go home!

I'm taking 3 friends with me this year, for one its his first time, I was listening to him talk on the air yesterday and its so fun to hear the excitement of the new guy!

One of the guys going has been 2 times with me and this will be his third time. The first time he won 2 prize, NICE ONES! I have never won any prizes but consider myself blessed just to be able to attend.

Yes the gas will cost us a little more this year but everything cost more if you can find a way to go, at least once in you life!

Dayton 2011
Having worked in the amateur industry since the early '80s, and many times cursed standing in our booth for hours on end(!), I told my industry friends last year that I probably wouldn't attend as a "civilian" in 2011. But, it's been 12 months, and now that I'm retired, I will drive over for one day, if anything, just to say "hello" to my friends in the industry, and to attend a few forums for the first time in a very long time. When you exhibit at Dayton as a member of the industry, you never have time to attend forums, or peruse the flea market. This time, however, I will have time to do both!

Posted by W9CW on May 8, 2011

Dayton 2011
Its amazing to me the various comments people have about Dayton. I have been going sense the 80's off and on. I was told by someone who has been going sense the 70's that it peeked in the 70's and has been getting smaller ever sense. It definatly was bigger in the 80's.

Back in the 80's the big hamfests in Indiana were very good, and the small ones were decent but small. Now days the small ones are so tiny its almost pointless and the 2 big ones in Indy are now one just usable size. The big on in Indy is like what use to be small ones were in the past.

Dayton is still the king. Its amazing great fun. People from all over the world is there. Forums, huge flea market, and EVERY radio available plugged in so you can play with it, and discounted prices.

Dayton is an amazing experiance. An ham who is at all serious about the hobby should experiace it at least once. If all you can do is get there, do it.

Find someone close who is going and tag along. I have been elmering a friend at work and am paying his way. It doesnt cost me any more gas money to add a person in the car, the hotel bill doesnt go up, the ticket is only $25.00, and we eat lunch meat, so Im spending an extra $10.00 to help out food cost.

To N4VNV, I understand money issues. Personally Id sacrifice all year if necessary, so many smoke and drink beer. Quitting tobaco use, and reducing beer are enoug savings to go. Use a visa that pays you back, allways pay it off like you do with cash, and take the 1-2 percent check and bank it. Eat romin nudle and rice occasionally. If you know someone close thats going and can get a ride, Ill paypal you the money for your ticket.

I know people to go to the small hamfests which are the big ones in the area, and complane, no parking, big hassle, crouds, etc. You have no idea what your missing. I konw people who have been hams for 20-40 years and never been. Anyone who has spend thousands over their life on equipment should save up $500.00 and eventually go.

I met a couple of guys from another country who goes to the hamfest, then Indianapolis, In for the 500 race. Then there are people who are 1 hour away and think its to far to drive. Imagine how many hams live in Dayton who dont go.

I have tried to figure out how to get a job in Dayton and purchase a house walking distance from HARA. Thats how its done.

People stand in line days and weeks for Harry Potter, to me Dayton should be no different.

I have been twice in years past and thoroughly enjoyed the show. I am planning a vacation around the Dayton show in 2012. Age, time driving from central VA, Gasoline prices all were considered in the decision to not go this year. I will read all about the 2011 show in QST.
